As some of you might know, I have recently been equipped with a pacemaker to stave off unwanted falls due to a slow heartbeat. At 84, though, I'm still not fully steady on my feet and I'm extra careful.

This morning I decided to wash the wife's car before the current Phoenix heat reached a predicted 115 degrees.

I hooked up the garden hose and was moving it over to her car in the driveway. Unfortunately I hooked a foot in the hose and took yet another fall. No broken bones, but I was unable get back up on my feet. The strength I had in my soldiering days has long since disappeared.

I had thoughtfully left the front door open with only the security screen door latched in place.

My dear dog Booger watched me take the fall and was visibly concerned. My wife was sound asleep this morning and failed to respond to either her cell phone or the house phone.

My only salvation was Booger. I called out to her to go get her mommy (my wife).

She did exactly that - ran into the bedroom and roused my wife from her sleep. My wife came out to help, and with the assistance of a neighbor who was out walking his dogs, the two of them managed to get me on my feet - OK except for some new bruises and scratches.

If it was not for Booger (who understands English perfectly), I'd still probably be prostrate on the porch in front of my house. She's a great little dog who played the Lassie role pefectly this morning! I'm glad she's part of our family...

I knew I'd arrived.....

First let me say that I LOVE really smart dogs. Had a Golden/Collie/Shepherd mix that would do anything I told/asked her to do.

What I really wanted to say was that I knew I had arrived when a lady we had been talking to when getting my weekly allergy shots didn't see us for a while for some reason. When we saw her she said she was wondering about the 'elderly couple' and what happened to us. Oh, boy.

Glad you're alright, and nice to have a dog watching over you. Mine knows when am not up to snuff, and actually let me have a longer nap yesterday.

If the low pulse rate doesn't get ya, the blood pressure meds will.

When they were still alive, my two Peke-a-Poos understood English perfectly when it was time to eat, or go for a ride...Any other time they just ignored me unless there was a treat in it for them...But I'm sure they would have wanted to help if I had hurt myself...Plus they were always willing to help me take a nap...

Booger is a good boy!...:)...Ben
