Has anyone here watched Bosch ? My wife and I have watched 5 seasons I think. It’s entertaining and episodes are relatively short, 40 mins or so. Here’s my question. Would an LA detective be allowed to carry a cocked and locked 1911 in 2015? Most others are carrying Glocks or some other plastic gun. And Bosch has too in some episodes. But mostly he has the 1911 and 2 spare mags on his belt. And the 1911 is cocked when you see it up close. Just curious.

LAPD does offer a 1911 transition course for officers. Not sure what the requirements are.

I believe their SWAT and SIS personnel also carry 1911s.

Not an expert on it though and hopefully one of the former LAPD guys will be along to correct any mistakes I made.

Enjoy the show and actually just started watching if for second time this week.

Bosch was a good show. Maybe it's artistic license to show a 1911 instead of a Glock, or even a SIG. But a good choice of weapon for a good character.

Yes, you I and everyone reading this knows that. But it’s a 2015 California setting. Who knows what they think. I just figured at the local police level they’d want everyone carrying the same gun.

Nothing whatsoever to do with the LA police or Bosch, but in the Texas County where my second home is, all of the Sheriff's deputies carry .45 1911s cocked and locked. No plastics to be seen.

Not me. It’s entertainment and not a documentary.
I find excessive realism a turnoff. I prefer older acting where violence is “theatrical” rather than explicit.
Props are props. Exercise your imagination.

But, I recognize that the trend is ever more graphic, explicit and realistic.
Understandable as too many people, especially younger ones, live life vicariously rather than participatory.

Not intending to criticize anyone. Just my opinion and preferences.

Re violence on the screen, there's probably a happy medium somewhere. Maybe it changes with generations.

Some of the violence on screen nowadays is, I think, deliberately cartoonish, so over the top that it is not realistic at all. At that level it just seems silly, and does not affect me. (My wife hates it though.)

The thing is, they make it a point to highlight his gun. There are times when all you see is gun , holster, belt, and hip. Zoomed in close. As well as the double mag carrier and badge. Maybe it’s them saying Harry is a rebel and badass. I also think Harry is the show’s producer. So there’s that.

Saw a local cop it the Publix just the other day with a c&l 1911 in a "low slung tactical" type holster. Didn't look like he was in the mood to answer questions about it. Joe

Bosch is eerily accurate in the precinct/police station scenes.

Reminds me of my old job. Almost too much!

Tom Selleck is a shooter, and IIRC the 1911 used in the 'Stone' movies is his personal gun that was built by the Gunsite Gunsmithy. Magnum was probably early enough that he didn't have as much say in the production, but it would have made sense with the character's military background.

Back to Bosch, yes, LAPD did authorize the 1911 during that timeframe. The books don't seem to dwell on Bosch's guns as much as the TV does, but there he started with a revolver.

The writer, Michael Connoley is one of the producers. IIRC in one of the books he claims Harry's 1911 is still allowed because of continued use.

Reading through this, I remembered how much I liked the first iteration of Bosch on Amazon. The early days of Prime and streaming. Started back on Bosch:Legacy, season one. Watched the first five today, while waiting out the heatwave. Next five in season one tomorrow, then on to season two. Great show, great actors and characters, excellent writing and adaptation.

Been a while since I’ve read the Bosch series books, but I remember in one where he is prepping his 1911 for the day.

He recalls dumping a bad guy with it, was pleased with the XTP ammo he chose to use in it. 1911 guy from then on.

Getting through the first season of Bosch:Legacy on FreeVee. I think there is a new "best line in cinema" in episode 10.

Bosch is tracking an assassin hired to kill his clients. They get into a gunfight in a house, and Bosch's S&W 27(?) is out of ammo. He drops it on the floor. Assassin says "Six shots. You brought an old man's gun, Bosch." He comes up behind her and shoots her with a semi-auto he confiscated from the man who hired the assassin. "You should've counted guns". It was dark, but looked like an HK.

The new show is as good as the original.

I believe the revolver Bosch was using in legacy was a night guard possibly 327 maybe 386.I’m not Bosch but now in retirement I rely on my 325 night guard a lot more.

In the case of Bosch, Longmire and Hammer, 45's are what the authors had their character's carrying so it makes sense their actor counterparts would carry them as well. I never read any Jessie Stone books so I can't comment on that character.

I've seen all 7 seasons of Bosch and 2 of Bosch Legacy. He mostly carried the 1911, but in a few episodes he used a polymer handgun and a revolver in some of the Legacy shows - if my memory serves me.
