Fresh from twenty years ago is my newly found 629-4 .44 Mag. I can't say I'm a .44 Mag fan (I love the .41), but I can't say I won't be once I start loading for it. I'm a sucker for 3" N frames.

I was rather pleased it still has the original box.

If nothing else, you'll have some good trading material if a nice 3" 657 comes your way one day. In fact, IINM there's a 3" 657 no dash on GB now.

From what I've read I believe these were produced in April of 1994. I've tried to learn exactly how many were produced, but I've had no success at all.

Anybody have an idea?

Enjoy, but man, just thinking about actually shooting it with Magnum ammo makes my wrist hurt. A big fellow might be fine with it, but I like my 5".

S&W made an 629-4 "Alaska Backpacker" in 1995 and a 629-5 "Alaska Backpacker II" in 2000. I have notes that they made (300) BPII. I also have a "Mountain Backpacker" in my s/n collection, also from 2000.

;) I will post a few pics, same right down to the red marker on the box ;)

I can say there is one less as I swapped out a barrel on one I had awhile ago for a magnaport custom chopped barrel piece which I sold, now wanting another 3.5 - 4in full lug gun :(

Awesome find, you guys are very lucky. I've been searching for a Pre-Lock 629 and haven't seen one yet around here. Heck I haven't seen any Pre-Lock Stainless N Frames around here.

Here is my Backpacker II I just picked up.

My research shows it is a non- catalogued 629-5 3" Alaska Backpacker II. Product code 103689. According to S&W this is 1 of 300. All 300 shipped to V.F. Grace Inc. in Alaska.

Maybe yours shipped to V.F. Grace as well??

Nice find. I shot it with full house .44 mags. Wasn't as bad as I expected:). 44 spl were more enjoyable though.

Enjoy that one for sure.

There was one of those posted for auction I really considered jumping on it, maybe the same revolver, I remember reading the VF Grace literature on website.
