Ok, I swore that I wasn't going buy anymore guns for awhile since we're building a new house. But I fell off the wagon. I shouldn't have been looking but I looked on Texas Gun Trader and saw where someone was selling a S&W Model 10 with a 3" barrel. Description indicated that there was some bluing wear but otherwise was a solid "shooter". I drove the 45 miles to meet the seller and here's what I walked away with for $270.

It's a 10-5 with some freckling on the back strap, a little under the stocks, the front sight is painted red, but it locks up really really tight. A little cleaning and this should look pretty good. The S&W stocks do not number to the gun but are in excellent shape. Serial number is D637XXX and it looks like it was shipped in 1968.

I'm going to have to start all over and see how long before I fall off the wagon again.

Thank you for buying that Model 10. I saw the ad also, and was hoping someone would buy it before the devil on my shoulder overruled the angel on my other shoulder telling me I didn't need another 3.0 inch barreled K-framed revolver. They, along with the original Bodyguard revolvers are kryptonite to me.

Congratulations on what a really nice piece. Range report, please, when you get a chance.

Regards,

Dave

I figured that someone had already bought it and the WTS ad hadn't been taken down yet. I already have two 3" Model 65's and have been looking for a 3" Model 13 when this Model 10 crossed my path. My search still continues for the Model 13, a 37, a 38, a 681, and ........

The seller was an active duty LEO and gave me a lead on few more S&W revolvers and 3rd generations. I think I'll be falling off the wagon again.

The range report will have to wait until I move. I've built up a 15' tall by 30' wide berm for the backstop but will have to pick or build some new targets........a whole lot of work still left to do (sigh).

Very nice! There were quite a few of these re-imported from Australia about 1-2 years ago and several threads about them are here.

Every time I say the same thing, no more somthing presents it self at the right price!!!!!
Oh well its my hobby that I enjoy!!

Rettxpo,

That gun does not exist; it's akin to the fabled unicorn.

Therefore, you did not do anything new house or not.

I got one from GT Distributers from the Puerto Rican guns. You can go totally nuts and dump another $750 into it with a bunch of custom work and np3 plus coating at Robar and Nill grips......yea, I went overboard, but it came out great. Nice score.

I think the addiction is epidemic here in Texas. I promise myself every time I buy one that I will not spend any more money for awhile. I saw that one, too. I held off. Now I wish I hadn't. Congrats!

I bought this one from an APD officer who might have bought it from GT Distributors also. The seller then went on to tell me that GT's had received a bunch of LEO guns from Puerto Rico. He said they had some models of the 686, 681, 65, 64, 13, 36, 32, 5906, 6906 and several more. Since I was "off the wagon" I went there today and took a look at what they had. I was really interested in a model 681 but they were all gone along with the 686's. They still had some of the following

  • 4" 65-2 ($299.95)
  • 4" 65-3 ($329.95)
  • 3" 65-3 ($349.95)
  • 4" 13-3 ($329.95)
  • 4" tapered barrel 10-5 ($199.95)
  • 2" square butt 36-? ($279.95)
  • 2" 32-1 ($289.95)
  • and a bunch of 3rd generations semi-automatic Smiths
  • 4" Colt Police Positive ($279.95) the finish was worse on this one compared to the Smiths

The blued guns all had finish wear but no pitting and the stainless guns had the polished areas from probably the holster (but we know they can be cleaned up easily).

I was able to keep my money in my pocket as I really went down there to buy a 681 (but I was very interested in the 32-1).

Like I stated earlier, I couldn't believe somebody hadn't bought it before I did. I've got to quit looking at the gun sites if I ever want to "stay on the wagon".

I've never seen a 3" M10-5. Pretty neat.

Now I'm curious. I've never checked to see what dash numbers were on the 3" ones I've seen.

When I started p/t employment at a LGS, this came in on trade the same week I started.
It's a M&P 3" tapered with a ship date of 1958, per Roy. I've not seen another.

That's a great looking M&P especially being a 3" and 57 years old.

I thought about a part-time job at a LGS but figured I would be paying them to work there. I would be like a kid in a candy store. I would be their best customer.
