I have just bought a 65-3 4" and will pick it up within two weeks, I hope. I plan on using the 158+p LSWCHP most of the time, and for 357 the 145 silvertip. I picked these two after going through different forums on this site. I am also looking, down the road to maybe going to a three inch barrel. I've been using the Corbon 110+p and the Federal personal defense load, 110 Hydra Shok in my 640 and 642. I have read that the K frame can not handle steady 357 ammo, but are there any others beside the 145 silvertip that I can try. This will be mostly used as a home gun, and sometimes carry. When I was a LEO [30+ years ago] we carried Model 10's and Colt Troopers and were issued 158 RNL, though after roll call, most officers would change to the 158+p. I do have a semi auto but find myself more at home with wheelguns. Thanks for all your help.

You should be able to shoot some reasonable facsimile of the "FBI" load all day long out of that gun. Seeing as how it's a K-frame, I'd stick to 158gr. .357 loads, although I thought that the real problems were with the 110gr. loads. I THINK the 145gr. load should be ok.

I've got a 3" 65 and really like it.

Good for you. I've got a Model 65, 3", bobbed hammer and I only use two loads. Buffalo Bore .38 special 158gr. LSWHP (hot FBI load) for normal use and WW .357 magnum 145gr. Silvertip when needed. Great gun, great loads, what more can you ask for. If six rounds from this gun won't do the job, you need the SWAT team. Enjoy.

I have a couple of 4" 64"s and love them. They are just like the beloved M10 from my old police days many years ago. I have a M16 that I have had since 1981. It has probably had a couple of thousand .357's through it and it is still in perfectly good condition. It has digested many, many more .38's of all types. The .357's have been mostly 158 gr. and 125 grn factory and reloaded ammo. I don't subject it to sustained shooting with extremely hot reloads. I believe the K-frame magnums were designed to be less of a burden for cops and others who had to carry them all day compared to the the N-frame .357's. As such, there was some trade off in durability with a steady diet of hot, magnum ammo. If, as was already said, you use a judicious amount of reasonable .357 ammo, particularly 158's, it should be fine.
