Box for a K22 1st model outdoorsman

Who knows, the price goes up constantly. Check ebay for closed auctions with recent dates. Sorry I can't give you a firm, fair trade price.

I haven't seen one at a gun show in a couple of years. At that time we thought it was outrageous for one in really bad condition with an asking price of $150. Suprize, it sold quickly. I guess the guy jumped at it because he realized he may not see another.

Back in the mid 1990s I needed a gold box. I found a gold and a red box together on a table, being sold by a book vendor, no less. He wanted $25 each for them, but sold me both for $40!

Those days are long gone.

A while back we had an exchage here on the forum where someone had seen a red box selling for $250 and we thought it was terrible. Its just progress. Fuel is $4 a gallon, too.

Years ago, Ray Brazile had an 8 3/4" RM box on his table. I wanted it badly. I couldn't bring myself to spend the money. Within a few minutes, it was gone.

Prices are set by supply and demand. A lot of people want the boxes and there aren't many for sale.

Just the addition of a box to a gun takes the value up significantly. Much more than the cost of just a box alone. Over the weekend I saw a K22 Outdoorsman in a red box with an asking price of $1595. I wasn't shocked, but last year that would have been a joke.

I am looking for a early K-22 Box for my s/n 634XXX. I understand from previous forum comments that generally early first year guns (up to s/n 640xxx) came with deep red/maroon boxes, not the more familar, later red picture box. I have seen comments on the foum of $200-300 for a nice empty red picture box, but I don't known about prices for the earlier box that I'm interested in.

I have two of the maroon hinged boxes. They're different. the earliest ones used a rubber stamp, the later ones had their own printed labels. Goodluck finding one.

We joke that the easiest way to get such a box is pay top dollar for one with a gun in it, then discard the gun. Not far from wrong.

The prewar/early 1930s maroon box is different from the early postwar 2 piece box. The one you're seeking has the corners cut at an angle on the bottom. Thats covered when the box closes.

I think you're looking for a needle in a haystack. Keep looking and asking, its the only way you'll find one. Just remember, guns are made of steel and wood, very durable items. boxes are made from glue and paper. Significantly more guns have survived than boxes. There will never be enough good condition boxes to cover demand. The problem is that you have significant competition. You're only advantage is that you know what you're looking at. For lousy photo examples, see P32 of SCSW 3rd.

Probably $200-350 for the red box, depending on condition.

Here is one of the boxes to which Dick alluded. This is probably the first design, originally printed for a .38, with a stamp indicating a .22 Hand Ejector on the inside of the top half. Green label on end.

Thanks everyone for your help. I'm fairly new to pre-war guns but sure are enjoying the few I have picked up.

Reciently I saw a late First model K22 outdoorsman with red picture box and 3 sets of grips, # to gun wood, a set of ivories, and a set of stags with a screwdriver for $2800 I believe it was. The owner claimed the gun was 98%. I wondered how the pricing on this combination would break down.

I may look for a box for the nicest of my three outdoorsmans. I realize it will take time and I really don't have access to many gun shows. Whers the best places to look? Thanks again, Byron

Byron:
The serial number is 635xxx which, according to the files would put it about June/July of 1931, the first year.

Have y'all started warming up yet?

We don't have enough information to really say much with confidence. My early box gun is in the 634,000s and has a box that appears identical to the one pictured. My gun with the "newer" maroon box is up around 638,500. For all we know, they used a different box with the 632,000s guns!

No way of telling until a few posters weigh in with their guns, hopefully lower than my 634,000s or between the 635,000s and my 638,xxx gun. Then we'd start to get a better idea. You don't see many of these guns at gunshows, sorry. One every 10 years is a flurry of activity!

Yes Ed warming nicely, Almost 50 above this morning. Which actually suits me fine as long as the wind stays down.

I have # 638xxx shipped sept.14, 1931.

also # 639xxx no letter. and 647xxx shipped jan. 1935. This is the one I bought from you Ed.
Its probably my favorite, not as good condition as the other two, but because of its connection to my hometown. Regards, Byron
