Hello folks,

I have a Brazilian crest 1917 that I was thinking about sending to S&W to have it refinished. Are the Brazilians crest models too valuable to allow that kind of work, or would I not be removing too much of the value of the piece with a reblue, etc.?

Thanks,

Jim

S&W will not do any work on a revover that is that old.

I wouldn't classify the Brazilians as valuable but yes, you'd be spending a lot of money to devalue what you have unless it is a rusted hulk.

The Brazilian I own and most of the others I have seen have bad wear and scratch problems to the finish, but most seem to be great shooters. It seems like they were all kept in a pile in the rain for a few years.
I won't refinish mine, just get a beat-up looking holster to make it feel at home and use it a lot.

+1.

And if it is a rusted hulk, no amount of refinishing will improve it much. Either way, you would probably be throwing money away. Why not save up for a better one? You could enjoy this one til you find what you want, then sell or trade it toward the upgrade.

Sounds like good advice from you all. My 1917 is in fairly decent condition, I just like having old, used, abused, things restored. It shoots fine so I guess I'll keep it as is. Many thanks for the replies.

If your 1937 still has an appreciable amount of original finish I'd leave it alone. Now, mine has vitually zero original finish and has quite obviously been reblued a number of times (cold blue, probably, from the looks of things), and one of these days I may send it somewhere for a re-do, with no regrets. In the meantime, it's a fine shooter with a lot of class even as-is.

You'd do better sending it to Gene Williams or I've heard Fords will redo the crest along with the finish?

Ford's can not re do the Brazilian crest as I have already asked them. They can only re-do S&W logos. Their bluing is almost an exact duplicate of of the old S&W Carbonia blue using modern methods. Mr. Williams is a suberb restorationist and is well worth the money.

Gene Williams has an engraver, that can do the emblem for you.

before I sent a gun to Ford's I would do a search on this Forum on "Fords".

That's disappointing to hear about Ford's service. They were going to get some business from me in the near future, but not now.

I came across this company a while back as another potential candidate for refinishing, etc. Any news - good or bad - about Cylinder & Slide, Inc.?
