What part of MA? Here in the Connecticut River Valley they're all over the place, including our back yard. There was a referendum years ago that outlawed the use of hounds to hunt them, and the population has grown bigger ever since. Some of them don't hibernate in the winter, but go around raiding bird feeders and garbage cans like this one. The fish and wildlife guys have weighed some yearlings at 200 pounds and more.
Maybe more like a glass of whiskey and a pack of Marlboro's.

A black bear was spotted in Northborough, next town over from me. There was one spotted in downtown Marlborough 4 or 5 years ago. Mass. Wildlife tranquilized and relocated it. Not too common around here.
