I occasionally drop in at an indoor flea market where one guy offers guns for sale. He usually has at least one Smith available. Recently he told me he had a M36, 3 inch in his safe that he intended to dig out and offer for sale. That was all he was able to tell me about it, M36, 3 inch. He must move a lot of guns. I believe if it were in my safe I would know a little more about it. Anyway, I know very little about the market and wonder what a decent price would be. I know not knowing things like is there a dash, is it round butt or square, condition and accessories makes estimating difficult but what do you think? Is a three inch more desirable than a two? Is round butt more desirable than square? What dash numbers are more collectible? Pinned and recessed is good right? Let's assume it is 98% what would you offer and why?

Should be a 36-1 if a heavy barrel. I like mine. Less muzzle jump , and longer ejector stroke. Could be round or square butt , they came both ways. Grip selection is far better for round. Older .38s are pinned , but not recessed. Only magnums and rimfires were recessed.

I was sort of wondering about that, but it didn't pan out. 
Around here, a 3-inch Chief usually doesn't get a premium. They go for the same price to a bit less than a similar 2-inch gun, usually less. I would guess a 3-inch 36, no box, just the gun, might sell for $350 or so, if in nice shape. Money seems to be getting kind of scarce for elective purchases and there are not as many buyers as there were a few months ago.
