I have a 60’s Browning A-5 and would like to know how to remove the magazine follower from the magazine tube. It slides freely in the tube but stops at the end of it and will not come out. Is there any trick to get this out, never had trouble with one before?? Thanks!

There should be a sort of a split ring that fits into the muzzle end of the mag tube. Reach in with a finger and pull it out. The Mag spring sometimes launches this ring and mag spring across the room, so be mindful of that.

No, not the retainer at the end of the tube. I got that out. It’s the piece behind the spring where you push the shells in.

I'm assuming you already have the magazine cap off and the magazine spring removed ????,,,and the follower is just sliding back and forth the length of the empty magazine tube now.
It can't come out the breech end of course by design.
It should just dump out the muzzle end.
But if it doesn't the edge of the magazine tube at that end may be very slightly bent out of round so the follower can't easily slide past it.
(Some people use a pliers, hammer and other means when handling that retaining 'cap' on and off, damage results )

If this is the problem,,,one thing you can try is to insert a heavy object like a substantial size lead bullet,,or a blunt face punch into the empty magazine tube from the breech end.
Push the carrier down out of the way and the empty mag tube is exposed.

Let the bullet/punch/whatever slide toward the muzzle as you tip the gun muzzle down. That'll push the follower ahead of it.
When they come to the problem point,,,use a shucking motion to carefully ram the weight and follower past the problem point of the magazine tube and out.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting this entirely,,then disregard! and just take Bulletslap's tip and remove the retaining cap and spring.
It is designed to easily slide out from the tube.
Watch your eyes!!

The muzzle end on the magazine tubes of my A5s are slightly swaged but not enough to prevent the follower from coming out. Hopefully someone else has an answer.

If it were mine I would take a flexible hose or something similar and insert it from the breech end of the mag tube and tap it out. If you try this be careful not to compound the problem.

There is a retaining ring from my A5 Light 20 lost in a field about 7 miles north of Ulvade. 🥴

Thanks for the info! I really don’t have to remove it other than just for cleaning the magazine tube of grease and gunk. I can just spray the tube out with brake cleaner and use a mop and rod to clean it up. Not going to do any more damage than necessary!
