Browning Help?

Can any of you experts identify this Browning for me? I only have the one picture. A friend of mine wants me to have it, as it belonged to his grandfather, and he doesn't do guns. Any idea of value?

Browning Challenger(dont think its a Nomad), dont think its the 1st model, but 2nd.....wonderfull guns. I have a early 60's in mint shape

Medalist was top of the line
Challenger(but be aware 3 version at least, early mags are $100-ish if you can find them)

I think somewhere around 300 is the retail value.I see a number of them offered on GB in that neighborhood.These were introduced around 1975-the original Challengers were discontinued in 1974.
The Challenger ll was eventually replaced by the Challenger lll,which has an aluminum frame and is very similar to it's replacement,the Buckmark.

I think that since your friend wants you to have the gun for personal reasons, I'd suggest $150-$200

Your call, but unless you really covet said gun, you should not push yourself to go the full boat retail. If it were a gun you had wanted and you were pushing the deal, well, you might feel inclined to offer more.

Until just a few years ago you could get mags from Browning for this pistol. They were mags made for the Buckmark with the little "cut" in the back bottom of the mag just like the one pictured. If you get it, go to a dealer that may have some "old stock" of Buckmark mags, and chances are you can find factory mags to fit it. The new Buckmark mags with the large baseplate will not fit it.

I have nearly worn out my old Challenger, and nearly a Buckmark too!

Colt Cadet mags work in certain Challengers

Oh.....they shoot wonderfull, much like a Woodsman(as it was a Browning design), not quite a 41....but not far from it

my early one is made with old world craftmanship, its just a joy to hold and look at, been looking for one for a bit, turned up at my buddies shop.......I went in, the stock # was my DL #......she knew it was for me

Paid $400 for mine just a few months ago, with 2 mags, case, might have had a few mags thru it in the last 40+ years

the grips on mine are the target style, never had a grip that felt so good

I agree with VonFatman's assessment,which is why I posted a "retail value" in my response.A deal between friends is different than offering a gun on a sale site,where it might,or might not,realize that value.

No, I meant similar to the OP's Challenger Model not the Buckmarks of today, which I have one of also. As you say, the new ones are OK but not built like the older ones.

But as far as my shooting goes, nothing beats my old Ruger MII Stainless Bull barrel. They have managed to cheapen those up just like use plastic trigger assemblies in the 10/22 rifles.

Here is another similar gun with a 4 and 6" Barrel.
