You're probably thinking of Riverines which are an expanded version of the VN brown water Navy. They have both boat operations and combat responsibilities that used to be handled by Marines. Here's pics of the 1st Squadron in Iraq. Their combat training is done by Marines at Camp Lejeune. Google Riverine for all kinds of info if you are interested.

There is another brown water Navy group that transports Seals but they have no combat duties IIRC.
