A close relative has owned this gun for many years and it has never worked. He was looking at some work I had done to a couple of my semis which got them working reliably and asked me if I would take a look at this Bryco 9mm.

I realize the Jennings/Bryco units are not that well thought of but I'd like to try and get this one running if possible.

I found a jennings/bryco discussion forum but can't seem to get registered there. It would not accept my gmail address so I used one of my isp addresses which seemed to work, but now I've been waiting for approval.

Was wondering if anybody here has experience with these guns?

I tried 3 different types of ammo and this is what happens:

Rack the first round into the chamber and fire. Then failure to feed second round from mag.

Or it doesn't even get that far and ends with failure to extract first round.

and then sometimes the mag pops out.

Other then that it works fine.

The feed ramp looks rough and I can of course polish that, but obviously there are other things going on here as well.

Now you know why they are not well thought of. If you care about the relative I'd tell them my dog ate the gun or someone broke into my house and all they took was the gun.
Good luck.

For the love of GOD, Country and all else good and pure in this world ... STOP!!!!!!!!
the gun sucks by definition which you already know .. but you dont know how deep the suck runs in that gun.

Look at the back of the slide .. yeah that little take down button below the rear suggestion (site) .... get a good close look at it cause your going to get another good close look at it in the future when it imbeds in your face.
But then .. why worry .. your firing pin will break before it fails in most cases.

I once had a Jennings .380 that would fail to feed and eject sometimes. Look at the top of the magazine, what I call the lips. They determine the angle at which the shell approaches the feed ramp. You can try to slowly ease the slide forward and watch what it is doing and bend the lips of the mag. in order to get a smooth feed. Polish the feed ramp first. Make sure there is no gunk in or around the ejector and that they have proper lubrication.
By doing these things I finally got mine running smooth enough to sell it. Hope this helps. And check the little catch at the bottom of the grip that holds the mag in. I had to file some dimensions here and there before mine was fairly smooth. It came with an extra mag that I never could get to work it held 13 rounds of bad luck I suppose:eek:
Peace,
gordon.

how many different mags did you try? If you've only got one, I'd suspect that until you prove otherwise. Check it carefully, as was said above. As to the slide takedown button hitting you in the forehead....it can, and will happen IF you let the gun get too dirty or there's a burr on the button or in the channel it slides in. Keep it well lubed too....you push forward on it to remove the slide, right? If it binds in any way when you fire the gun and the slide is travelling forward, it will move forward too, allowing the slide to release and depart downrange while the spring and button to take off in the opposite direction. I have a Jennings J-22 (same basic design) that I've tinkered with and finally got to function 100% with all 5 mags...it's pretty accurate too. I had a Bryco 38 (compact .380) that shot & functioned really well too but after about 500 rounds, the frame cracked. I sent it back and they actually replaced it w/no charge but the new one didn't shoot nearly as well so I sold it. My point is that even if you get it working OK, the service life of these guns is short so don't put a ton of rounds through it.

I always thought they were doing it wrong trying to get rid of those guns. Now the hoods have to go out and steal good guns, which will actually work as designed.

I had one of those Bryco 58s I got in a trade. Heard nothing but horror stories about them though it shot nicely and never failed in the year I kept it but when someone offered me 100 bucks for it I was quick to take it.
