Bubba'd 1917 Army: WARNING!

I was thinking maybe something customized/personalized/decorative could be fitted where the frame material was removed.

You know something really creative.....maybe even "Smith&Wessony".

"Seriously, just look at some of the stuff Keith did."

Can you post or refer to a source of Elmer's "stuff"? Most of his handgun mods were done by others, such as Harold Croft. Many folks feel that his No. 5 Colt is the best all around single action grip. And the gold bars added to the front sight are also practical.

"I do know one thing, though. If that gun belonged to me, those grips would be consigned to the junk drawer or the garbage can, one of the two."

I agree that Pachs aren't very pretty, but they are practical. A lot of cops, including me, pulled off the factory wood grips and put Goodyears on for duty use.

I supect even with those Pach grips, there's still a gap showing from the top view.

Whether one used S&W Magnas, Targets, or aftermarket wood grips, a wood filler piece is still needed. A two piece filler with half glued to the back of each grip.

If one was to make other modifications requiring a re-blue, I'd weld in a filler piece and restore that huge notch to the factory contour.

One could weld on a period hammer spur to fix the hammer. But they're a bit hard to cock for single action so I'd graft on a modern hammer spur. Or fashion a hammer spur in the style of the King hammer spurs.

I'd tap the hole behind the trigger guard and use a standard flush plug screw. Or if one likes the Tyler T grip type filler, just cover the hole with it. Or again, if the gun will be refinished, weld up the hole.

Earlier in the thread I semi-joked about using JB Weld to fill the gap in the frame. Well, I was bored yesterday and decided to go ahead and try it. Still needs some final contouring, but I think it's a vast improvement.

Not bad! Better than the Pachs!

If it were mine, I'd see it as a prime candidate for a big-bore snubby.
