Currently we have another "Bugging Out what handgun?" thread going. Probably about the 100th Bug Out thread since I joined the Forum.

A lot of us are prepared to "Bug In"..... some of us are already Bugged Out given where we live. Some have a " safer place" to go!

I started to pay attention to the whole subject from just before Y2K (1999), reinforced by 9/11...videos of hurricane and forest fire evacuations .. most recently by Glenn Beck :) But, mostly because I'd finally gotten married and my boys were born in 1997 and 2000..... so while not a Prepper I'm prepared to look after my family.

One guy in the current thread said to the folks in Wyoming and Montana "What are you going to do when we show up with grandkids....... and armed to the teeth?"

I doubt many will be willing to take in armed strangers and share their food, water and TP. Be hard to turn mothers and small children away. Not sure I want to turn my back on "military age men"!!!!

What are you going to do?

Given that recent polling has 71% of the population saying the country is going in the wrong direction, recession, inflation, the Ukraine, China and 300,000 "Got aways" so far this year.................

If the SHTF what are you prepared and willing to do?

Something to think about!!

In the end, I believe in forming communities. No one trying to hide will last for long; too many trackers and backwoods folks with better skills.

Communities of folks who protect each other seems to be the only viable long-term option in most scenarios. Gangs of bad guys will eventually be roaming everwhere. Study history.

Too many here think it's about choosing a gun.

I live in a retirement community...the only crime here is closing my eyes when the neighbors go out in their robes to get their mail or newspapers.

I'm thinking the only thing I have to worry about is some of the neighbors turning into Zombies at some point.

Still...to be realistic...my current choices are a Colt Trooper Mark III .357...a Colt AR-15 9mm Carbine...and either my Remington 870 or Benelli M1 Super 90.

Living on an Island we must stay ahead of
the game. We can load up all important
items and split within a matter of hours.

Lots of time regarding a hurricane's landfall.
The run is only about 150 miles inland to our
other property.

Let's see. We just got a fresh 7", and that was before the wind started. Every road in the southern part of the state was closed for two days. This morning's thermometer reading was -30.

Come on!

I'm 70 years old, wife's 60:
We are here, will be here. Have family in Colorado and Indiana, they are young and armed and have heard my "preaching."
I buy a case of 9mm whenever the gun fund is fat.
We always have food for 2 weeks but you can triple that timeframe if we "ration."
There are fish (and gators and turtles) in any water bigger than 100 yds across. Don't think FWC going to be worried about "harvesting" should SHTF.
Lotsa cows around and I know a few owners, we can work something out.
Almost impossible to freeze to death here. Everything is electric but we can do without it except for entertainment. If society melts down should be plenty "games" to be played.
Point is you can't plan for all eventualities. Reality will change minute to minute. Comes a point "Something Bigger" will need to look out for us. Joe

I'm way to close to a small city of about 100,000 Billings...80 miles...and rea;;y too close to a town o10,000 Cody...45 miles. Luckily by the time the survivors get here they'll be whittled down a bit. But they will be the SURVIVORS. Still I am somewhat isolated. Just have to say...ya can't kill 'em all. Also have to say...women with small kids will be as dangerous as the men...or more so! Last thing...people with a conscience...will not survive when it comes to TEOTWAWKI! Working in emergency services I have seen civilized?? people at their worst

Sorry OP. Ain't nutin you can come up with to worry me more than my doctors already do. Made peace with my Maker. I'm good.
Bug out? I'd suffocate once my meds run out.

I'm staying close to "my pile"
Pile of food
Pile of ammo
Pile of arms
Pile of shelter
etcetera

In the end, I believe in forming communities.

Communities of folks who protect each other seems to be the only viable long-term option in most scenarios.

Really haven't thought much about bugging out. I have just about all that I really need right here at the ol' homestead. But more importantly, our community is one of those that really watches out for each other.

For example, right after this weekend's big storm, dumping 21 inches of new snow on top of the foot or so we already had, a bunch of guys in the community were out with tractors, snow plows, side-by-sides, and ATV's plowing driveways and making sure everyone could get out. On top of that, we had a group of teenagers going around the neighborhoods shoveling walks and helping to clear driveways.

Another example...about three years ago, an elderly single woman in town needed her roof replaced. A large group of men and boys re-roofed her house. Cost to her? Nothing. It was a big outing. Lunch was provided by a group of ladies and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Several years ago, a local home's basement got flooded due to some heavy, early spring, runoff. There were at least ten to twelve people over there helping the family get things pumped out and cleaned up.

During Covid, there was a large cardboard box there in our local post office filled with packages of homemade soap and homemade hand sanitizer. It was provided by a local lady in town. Each package of soap had a little note that read: "This soap may not be pretty, but it's functional. Wash your hands!"

And one more...during the summer, there's always a large cardboard box in the post office where people put any extra produce that they've grown for those who are needy or who don't have a garden.

So, bottom line...why would I ever want too bug out? I mean, I live in a community that, so far, is ready to take care of each other, no matter what the situation. Are we perfect? Heck no!...not by a long shot...but I believe there are many, many communities out there that are pretty much the same as ours.

I dunno...I may be wrong, but I think if the proverbial "ship ever hit the sand," many communities and neighborhoods would rally together and help each other out. I really believe that.

Yes, here in NJ, bug out-to where ? You think rush hour traffic is bad ? Better to shelter in place. Biggest problem I have, electric stove-apartment dweller.

Note to "Electric stove, Apartment dwellers." Buy a single burner camping stove! Choose which type of fuel carefully! One accessory nobody talks about is a Fireplace liner brick! You heat the brick on the stove, wrap in a bath towel and put it inside your bedding! Cooking, bathing and water purification, that all fits in a kids lunchbox. Spare and replacement fuel isn't too difficult to stockpile. "Coleman Fuel" is good for decades! Multi fuel is abundant! (The MSR, "XGK" model will work with any liquid that burns, including many paint solvents, Chainsaw 2 cycle fuel, whiskey and diesel!) During extended outages we just set up a Coleman 2 burner stove on top of the dead electric stove. (far more comfortable than bending over at the fireplace!)

During the locally famed, "Blizzard of 78", those with a fireplace (let alone a woodstove) did just fine once the decided to use their expensive cooking pots in the fire!

Bug-in or Bug-out, without forethought will be miserable!

The oldest survivalist joke: DON'T FORGET THE CANOPENER!

I...

Yup. As von Moltke wrote, "No plan survives first contact with the enemy."

I'm the same age as you and would "bug in", much like Rustyt1953**. That being said, we're probably in less danger up here in Canuckistan than many of you folks. Besides, our brave PM has repeatedly promised to "Keep Canadians safe." What could possibly go wrong?

** Note to self: Make more fruitcake.

Like Mary, when my prescription heart meds run out Ruthie will soon after be looking for a shovel. If the city water supply gets cut off I am left with straining the dead carp, tires and sofas out of the Ohio River.

Either way I'm compost.
