Bulged Barrel

I saw a Model 27 6 inch today with a bulged barrel about an inch from the muzzle . If it was cut what is the easiest solution to replace the front sight. Will milling a slot in the rib and pinning in a sight work . The
original front sight is a partridge .

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Dave,I use the Weigand front sight system on the Smith revolvers I repair,The original front sight (or whats left of it)is milled off,Then you mill a slot for the new sight base.You can have any type of front sight you want..Ramp,Partridge.ect ect.The base can be had in blue or SS.

If I were doing it, I would have SDM put on the new interchangeable sight base. Looks like factory when it is done.

The Weigand system is what Scott at SDM uses.

Sounds like Dave and Ken need to get together, if that's possible.

Bulged barrel

If the bulge is not noticeable on the outside of the barrel you could have a smith run a .375 dia reamer back just past the bulge and have a 5" barrel with a 6" sight radius, this would only remove about .018 from i.d. of the barrel, would not be bad only if o.d. of barrel is not bulged. Jeff

Thanks for the help. The millled slot solution looks fairly neat. The bulge is very noticeable from the outside so the boring out would work but the bulge would be very noticeable.

Jim Stroh has recently designed a new sight for the S&W Revolvers that is almost an exact match for the factory sight and base. The give away is the small set screw at the front that permits the interchange of sight blades. The ramp is serrated to match the serrations on the S&W barrel.
The sight base fits into a milled slot in the barrel, and held in place with three hidden torx head screws. The milled slot is hidden by the base. A little more machine and skill intensive than the Weigand sight; but it matches the S&W lines to the max..It's the best I've seen..
Send your revolver to Jim. You won't be sorry.
He also makes one for the single action round barrels..

Magna-Port can cut, and reuse the front sight. I don't know how they do it, but they did this S&W Highway Patrolman for me, and did a great job.

You can use a carbide slitting saw and take the original sight off.Your gun looks like it was welded and filed and the markings on the barrel restamped.The original contour of the barrel has been changed,Including The Rib Area.What you have Can be done but people dont want to pay.
