Spent a few weeks perusing the possibilities for our annual family fishing trip, shopping the "vacation home rentals". Finally settled on a very nice home situated right on the water with its own boat dock. Worked out all the scheduling details with Son #1 and his wife, Son #2 and his family, all the grandchildren who might be able to show up for a few days (residing in 4 different states, all having to plan travel).
Signed on the dotted line a good 10 weeks ahead of time, securing our little spot for the vacation. Sent full payment, plus state taxes, plus deposit, plus cleaning fees, plus damage insurance. Started looking forward to ten days of having all the family coming and going as their schedules allow.
Email this morning from the property owners, they have sold the house, no longer available, full refund pending on my credit card (estimated 5 business days).
OK, back to the wish list. Second choice property not available for our dates, but by adjusting the schedule a couple of days I can hook that one up (also right on the water, very nice place). Explanations to the sons and grandkids, couple of days difference in the scheduling, everybody understands.
Try to hook that one up, but my credit card company doesn't like a second big-dollar charge for lodging for the same general time period. No go, probably red flags waving over my file as an old retired guy who seldom spends large amounts of money on such things.
Another one of life's little challenges. I shall overcome!
It used to be a lot simpler. The 2 boys and I could stay in a rustic cabin for a few days, demonstrating to the local bears that people really did do that in the woods, eat when we felt like eating, drink what we felt like drinking. Now the women and kids think they should have some fun, too! Modern house, fancy kitchen, indoor toilets, cable TV & internet service, AIR CONDITIONING for goodness sake!
Won't be long and they'll be expecting concierge service and valet parking at a fishing camp!
