Burn Marks

I recently bought a S&W .357 386 XL Hunter, love the gun but its getting burn marks on the cylinder that are difficult to remove. I called S&W and the gun is coated with an epoxy so they told me not to use Hoppes solvent. I tried some stuff I've used on my boat for cleaning the plastic glass and it works but it polishes the cylinder sides. Can anyone give me a recommendation as to what to use?

Try a Lead Wipe Away cloth .

Burn marks on the front face of the cylinder are normal. No need to remove the circular burn marks around each chamber.
On the side of the cylinder, try Birchwood Casey Barricade.

I don't know if I would try that. It could remove the finish. I only use them on stainless.

S&W will recommend Hoppe's Elite if you ask them. You cannot use abrasives in any form on the cylinder. If the Elite won't take it off, don't worry about it, it shouldn't come off. I used the Elite on my 342Ti and it worked very, very well without disturbing the finish.

The circular burn marks on the cylinder face are a fact of life when you shoot a revolver. Attempting to clean them completely every time you shoot the gun will drive you insane!

On an epoxy finish gun, one of the new water based cleaners like Hoppes Elite is your best bet. Do not use a lead away cloth as they are abrasive and will remove the epoxy.

My 642 Airweight is probably the dirtiest looking gun I own. The blast residue on the frame is nearly impossible to clean completely without damaging the finish on the aluminum, so I quit worrying about it.

I don't know if I would try that. It could remove the finish. I only use them on stainless.

If I remember correctly the S&W .357 386 XL Hunter has a black coated stainless cylinder. Personally I'd just clean it normally and not bother with trying to remove the scorch marks, as you've noted it's already had an undesirable effect on the finish.
Just shoot and enjoy.
