I plan on starting to compete in idpa and 3 gun. I currently have an M&P 40L. Decided I want to compete with 9mm so I ordered a 5" 9mm barrel, but I can't find 9mm mags. I'm going to need at least 3-4 mags, so buying an M&P 9mm with a couple mags won't solve my problem.

S&W told us that 9mm mags are going to be released shortly so hold tight!

Where was this heard and in what quantity? They could release 500,000 of them and they'd be sold out in a day or two. If I decided to compete, I have my XDM 4.5" with 19rd mags that can be found everywhere made by MecGar as well.

Directly from my Rep at the factory. No idea how many they are releasing.

When I ordered my mags from S&W on June 4th they sent me a post card stating "backlog" and shipping would come in 4-6 weeks. So from that we can guess maybe 1-3 weeks from now.

Buy an M&P FS 9, then you have the best of both worlds, a comp gun and a carry gun.

Get some mag extensions for three gun. That will take your capacity to 23 rounds per mag. You will never need more than two in a club match.

For IDPA the max rounds/stage is 18. I've never needed a third mag.

I suppose DHS bought 1.6 billion magazines as well.........just being a smart aleck...

The mags are out there.

Like the title says, they are there if you look for them. I got a 9L Core for Fathers day. It came with two mags. I found one at Quantico Tactical last week ($30), and I was looking at GB (seeing the $100 and up prices kinda glazed my eyes) then I spotted a 17 round mag with a couple of hours left on the auction and there were no bids on it, so I popped a $50 bit figuring I didn't have a chance. Next day I got an email saying I'd won the auction. Seems like a lot to pay for a mag but when I considered the current availability at most places and the prices I'm happy with it. Here's a pic of the new one.

and the full set.

You can get a m&p 9fs carry and range kit which comes with 3 mags total. I've seen a few for sale at my LGS, so I'm hoping you can find some at yours.

Quantico tactical had them in stock for around $30. Don't know if they still do. Bud's Guns said they sold them for $21 a piece (at least to LE) when they had them in stock (they didn't as of this week). The Glock 17 is a great pistol, but I'm surprised you can find magazines for one.

Glock mags are simple to find like everything else. The only mags I don't see on the shelves or online are M&P 9mm 17rd. mags. Hopefully the rumor of them showing up sometime soon is true. I already have 4 factory mags and just want 4 more.

OP, the only problem with your plan is that you'll end up with a Glock... That is OK if you like a grip that feels like holding a 2x4. IMHO, you should get/keep the M&P and track down some mags. I might even have a couple of spares if you want them bad enough. :)

G17 was $500,extra mag was $30. Put 100 rds through it today. Real happy with it. When i find 9mm m&p mags for $30 or less, I will swipe them up.

Funny that you posted this. I am thinking of picking up a G19. In think Glock is trying to tell me something. Out of nowhere, a full Glock Store Booklet was mailed to me. Lol.

Glocks are fine pistols, and I would never question someone buying a Glock. I've handled enough of them to know they are great pistols, and they are not for me. Despite practice and thousands of rounds of ammo I shoot the glock left when working fast and off instinct. I can shoot it straight if I force more trigger finger onto the trigger, but to do that I have to alter my grip to something not so natural. As we know, if the SHTF I won't be focusing on getting more trigger finger. That's when I tried an M&P. When it comes to m&p vs glock it comes down to the individual shooter. Both are outstanding, and I know which one was made for my hand.

Good luck and stay safe.

Glocks are great. I'd take one in a pinch any day.

Given the OP's situation I still would have opted for the M&PFS9. I would prefer to have the better sights and longer sight radius of the Pro, especially for three gun. And, the FS9 is a great carry gun(especially with Trijicon HDs) on the same platform as the comp gun. Plus, I shoot the M&Ps about 8% better(faster and more accurate for me, I've run the scores).

But, nothing is wrong with a Glock17(I ran one for several months this spring) that can't be fixed, and I know tons of great shooters that run them.

I think the OP will ultimately sell one or the other and concentrate on one platform, only because that is what I did, it makes life simple.

OP--I have two G17 mags with Dawson six round tuned extentions(23rnds) that I would be happy to sell if you want them, they are the bomb for 3Gun....

Well I guess the Glock is OK if you have no other choice. The grip angle is different than the M&P though. If you're used to the M&P you'll have trouble with the Glock.
