Wasn't sure where to post this. I saw an ad on Armslist that I would like to buy the gun from but they are quite a distance away from me. I understand that they must to an FFL transfer to my FFL but how does the payment process work? Am I supposed to just send a random person money and hope they send the gun or is there a more official way of doing things?

In a word..NO. I have done quite a few armslist transaction but they are always FTF. There are too many scammers on armslists to take a chance on sending money hoping they are going to send a gun. We get scammers here but the Mods and members do a great job weeding them out and exposing them.

I've driven 6 plus hours rnd trip to do a transaction like the one you're considering.

So here is another question. I live in Idaho and want a gun that is in Montana. Does the seller need to drive to an Idaho FFL to sell it to me? What if he was willing to do a trade with one of my guns?

Unless someone has a better thought the seller would need to ship the gun to your Idaho FFL. Just like we do transactions here through this forum.

Now if this is still the armslist seller and I was the potential buyer I still would not send the money. If the seller was willing to send it to your FFL and your FFL would agree not to release it until the seller has received the funds, then I might go forward with the transaction.

Form ATF.Gov

2. May I lawfully transfer a firearm to a friend who resides in a different State?

Under Federal law, an unlicensed individual is prohibited from transferring a firearm to an individual
who does not reside in the State where the transferee resides. Generally, for a person to lawfully
transfer a firearm to an unlicensed person who resides out of State, the firearm must be shipped to a
Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) within the recipient’s State of residence. He or she may then
receive the firearm from the FFL upon completion of an ATF Form 4473 and a NICS background
check. More information can be obtained on the ATF website at ATF Home Page | Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and
Unlicensed Persons | Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The GCA provides an exception from this
prohibition for temporary loans or rentals of firearms for lawful sporting purposes. Thus, for
example, a friend visiting you may borrow a firearm from you to go hunting. Another exception is
provided for transfers of firearms to nonresidents to carry out a lawful bequest or acquisition by
intestate succession. This exception would authorize the transfer of a firearm to a nonresident who
inherits a firearm under the will of a decedent. See 18 U.S.C. 922(

Buy locally if you can. Much less headache and you may actually save money instead of paying shipping and transfer fees.

What if he was willing to come to Idaho to sell me the gun? Could we meet at an FFL in my state and do the transfer?

Absolutely. Whether the gas cost is cheaper than the shipping is something to consider.

Sorry about all the questions, I am pretty new to buying across state lines and buying online.
What if I wanted to trade him one of my guns? Is that possible?

Yep, you drive to his home state and deliver the gun to his FFL.

Questions are good! Seems you're on the right track.

So he drives to my FFL to sell me his gun then I go to his FFL to sell him my gun?

^that would definitely work, if you are both willing to do that amount of driving but ensure ahead of time that you have a willing FFL at each place.

An FFL can take a gun in from anyone as long as that person can give him ID along with the gun.

Back to the original question: Armslist sucks and while I'm sure than many have had acceptable experiences through Armslist, the signal to noise ratio is as low as it gets.

You would have to take possession in your home state and he would need to do the same in his home state.

We are assuming you mean handguns

Long guns are less strict. Interstate transfer of long gun still needs to be through FFL, but it does not need to be in the buyer's state of residence.

Look on Gunbroker......

Find a gun on Gunbroker that is posted by an A+ seller with a few thousand sales.

Checkout is a piece of cake now. You just pay for it when you win your bid (or buy it now) online seamlessly. Most charge shipping, the last gun I got was free shipping. Gunbroker will want to know what FFL you use. It may already be in Gunbroker's database, if not, you just have to fill out address, phone numbers, etc.

You tell your FFL, often on their website, to expect a gun from you and who you are buying it from. They will send paperwork to them.

After a couple of days it comes in to your FFL, you go and fill out the 'are you a felon' questions. Pay the FFL their transfer fee and it's yours.

I bought a gun a few weeks ago.

I won the auction, I went to check out and supplied info and paid.

Tracked shipment until it arrived at FFL. The FFL called me that afternoon and I went to pick it up. Gave them 20 bucks transfer fee and I had bought from them before so they already had my info. I took the gun home and next day tried it on the range.

That's as easy as duck soup. Boil water, add duck.:D

Bud's Gun Shop is a good place to buy and other's may vouch for more of the 'straight up' sites here. Slick people can infiltrate and ruin any good gun buying site.

If there is ANYTHING 'kinky' about the sale, beware. Make sure the gun they picture IS the one that they will send. Good dealers are glad to ask questions and post picture.

Not many dealers do, but some will let you return after an inspection period At any rate, you should check it at the FFL to make sure nothing is grossly wrong.

BTW FFLs can ship to FFLs anywhere in the US. I'm in SC and the dealer above was in Minnesota. The only driving to be done was five minutes to my fFFL.

I purchase from a online ffl, I pay him. My ffl at home sends my online ffl a copy of his ffl. The online ffl ships it to my ffl here at home he does the transfer to me for $40. Most local ffl' here charge $50.
