As is the usual with such events, fingers will be pointed, blame shifted, excuses made, and so on.
I will make no further comment on that here tonight. What I will make comment on here and submit for your approval (to quote the late, great Rod Serling) is two problems to well consider:
First- No accountability. We live in a society where the inmates have control of the asylum and as such, things normally on the radar just a few years ago are now "It's not their fault...it is society's fault because we as a society have failed them..." (FWIW, I was actually told this by a client involving inmates many years ago). These days, you go to court on a capital offense and you are more as likely to get bail because the court deems you to have been oppressed for some reason or another. Until this ceases, problems will continue. If we have to build more SuperMax/Alcatrazs then we need to do so and lock the bad guys away...period. That is all I will say on this.
The second- assigning the term "mental illness" to each and every person doing these kinds of attacks. To me, that is a crutch and an easy way out...a label to hang on the elephant in the room. MALE BOVINE EXCREMENT! There is a difference between mental illness and sheer, unadulterated evil. That is what attacks like this are: EVIL. Nothing more and nothing less. WE can call the perps terrorists, cowards, scumbags, whatever....fact is that they are evil beings and when evil is allowed it will flourish and multiply unchecked meaning more of this stuff. We are seeing this not only here, but around the world as well (look at the rioting in Switzerland, for instance). To me, a person that is a mental case that does things like this yet cannot understand that it is wrong ARE legit mental cases. The "things" (I hesitate to use the term "people" for them) that do these things are FULLY AND COMPLETELY AWARE OF WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND THAT IT IS EVIL. That is as I'm sure you'll agree is a completely different issue.
It is said that "For evil to thrive good men must do nothing." This is true. We are seeing it almost daily. Many are actually reveling in it. Many of us here have been face to face with TRUE evil...sometimes on many occasions. Those of you that haven't, consider yourselves lucky and I hope you never do. I have on only a very few occasions where the thing I am dealing with actually excludes an aura of malevolence that...as in my case...gave me the shivers and made the hair on the back of my head stand on end.
I wish I had an answer. I have some suggestions but to put them here would get me banned for sure and probably visited by the authorities.
