CA. Edition Shield ... Can't Pull Trigger To Release Slide? Cause of Mag-Disconnect?

I know this stupid thing has the Mag-Disconnect installed and I cannot pull the trigger with no mag .... I assume in turn I am not able to release the slide either by pulling the trigger as well since I can;t do this without the mag in?

This thing is much different in these two areas then my other weapons.

I do see there is videos on how to remove the mag-disconnect but I am not comfortable enough yet tearing down my frame parts and pulling the sear block etc. to do this ... and it seems you need some sort of spring as well to put in there after the disconnect is removed which I would not know where to find.

SO .... Am i stuck having to pull down the sear lever every time I want to remove my slide?

That is about the most confusing post I've read.

I have a standard edition shield 9mm with safety.

To disassemble,
-drop the mag
-clear the chamber
-lock the slide back
-turn down the disassembly / takedown lever
-look down in the magwell for the (originally) yellow lever. Move that out from the wall to the center of the mag channel with a screwdriver, wood tool, whatever
-release the slide lock, and the slide will separate.

Not sure what pulling the trigger or touching the sear has to do with disassembly.

I field strip my shield after every range trip. This process works (and is what the manual tells you to do).

Yes. That is the way all M&P series pistols are designed for removing the slide. Lowering the sear deactivation lever (SDL) is considered safer than pulling the trigger to accomplish the same thing.

Even the M&P's without the mag disconnect direct that using the SDL is the correct method.

I own an M&P9 CORE and I never pull down the sear release lever.

I pull the trigger ... That lever means nothing to me (at least if your not incompetent to not know if your gun clear or not anyway).

My OP made perfect sense.

I do not want to pull the sear lever down ... If I want to strip my gun on the fly I cannot without a tool, and if there is no tiny tool available your screwed ... At least the full size M&P's have the tool built into the grip.

I just want to pull the trigger like every other gun in the world ... This makes zero sense to me with these things and this mag disconnect is the culprit here I think and is equally as redicilous.

The SDL is optional you can use it or not it's up to you. S&W were very smart in this respect it's your choice I won't support one side over the other. The mag disconnect is another matter but at least if you remove it you don't have the warning written on the side of the gun like the non-mag disconnect M&P's. Every gun should be treated as loaded and capable of firing at any time, even with magazines removed. When will the muppets get their head around this?

You don't need a tool to lower the SDL -- you can stick your pinky finger in there and grab it with your finger nail. No different than sticking your pinky finger into the breech to feel for no round in the chamber, which you already do anyway, right?!

You bought the gun with the mag disconnect. That's what's ridiculous.
Now you whine that you don't want to follow the only way to remove the slide from the gun you bought. That's pointless.
And you're scared to remove the mag disconnect so you can operate it in the manner you prefer.
You don't appreciate people here telling you the mechanical truths about the gun you bought.
Your bullheadedness is what's ridiculous. S&W has made a mechanical device, a gun with a mag disconnect, that you don't like but others do. Sell the gun and get what you want, but don't blame us or S&W for your ignorance.

If it bothers you that much, simply clear it, lock the slide back, rotate the takedown. Reinsert an *EMPTY* mag, Hold the slide back and press the slide stop down. SLOWLY ease the slide forward until it reached battery. Pull the trigger. The slide will move forward slightly, then hang on the mag. Drop the mag and the slide will come off. Do not point the muzzle down since the slide will fall off when you release the mag. The mag may not spring free since it's pinched by the slide.

This is not an approved method of disassembly. I provide merely for education and discussion. I use the disconnect lever and suggest you get used to doing the same.

Or get a Glock.

Look into finding someone to remove the disconnect.

With the mag disconnect Shield:
Ensure chamber and mag are empty (duh)

1. Lock back slide
2. Insert empty magazine (it would be more convenient to use the higher capacity magazine (See #7 below). It's also easier to insert a magazine with the slide locked back.
3. Rotate takedown lever and make sure it stays in the down position
4. Release slide with the slide lock
5. Pull the trigger
6. Push the magazine release button
7. PULL THE MAGAZINE OUT <-- it won't "pop" out like it does with the full size gun. The higher capacity magazine is easier to grab than the flush one.
8. When the magazine comes out, the slide should release foward and out

I hate using the sear deactivation lever also and the mag disco is an inconvenience but not an insurmountable obstacle.

I bought the gun cause I love M&P's and it was the best feeling gun for a carry weapon .... I will admit I Did Not know it had the mag-disconnect Stupid Friggin "feature"

And it;s not the only way to remove a slide from a gun Just this stupid one ... And the Only reason is due to this ridiculous mag-disconnect if I understand it correctly.
Yes I am not a gunsmith and not wanting to have to modify a gun for it to work just like just every other gun in the world when removing the slide.

I do appreciate the replies but the one I replied to did Not help me at all and I am still trying to figure out why S&W thinks it's users are so stupid as to install a mag-disconnect ... I get the sear leaver, thats a nice added feature for those who don't feel comfortable pulling the trigger. I DO ... but I know can;t pull the trigger due to the mag-disconnect.

I'm not bullheaded ... just can't stand stupid features like this that don't help anything but only make it much more difficult is all.

And I would Love to hear why other "Like" the mag disconnect ... I am failing to see any advantage to it ... if there was why does it seem so many guys go through the effort of removing it?

Yes not the easiest way of course but a way to do without dropping the lever ... cause I don;t know if my hands are to big with to fat of fingers but there is NO WAY I can stick my pinky in there and drop that lever.

I do not mind do thats at all ... IF it was easy
I guess if you have skinny fingers with a nice fingernail on the end then it may be no biggie ... I can't do it.

Like I said I will admit I had No Clue about this mag-disconnect was on the Shield ... I own another M&P and just assumed they were all the same. Such A STUPID feature ... I have zero clue what advantage this thing has.

But I do thank you for the info and work around if ever need be.

I started this thread not even knowing if it was really the mag-disconnect that caused this not to work ... I was 95% sure but just wanted to know and see if there was a work around.

Perfect .... Ya CA. does suck ... I want out of this place yesterday.

And I live in the valley so I can't even say the weather is nice ... it's the worst air quality in America, smoggy and just a 100+ most all summer. Though you are in Sacramento ... not much better there really either.

I don't get why you're blaming S&W. It's California law the gun must have mag disco. S&W installed it so it could be sold legally in California, same with the big fat Loaded Chamber Indicator.

If you hated that feature so much you should have bought a non-CA version back when we still had SSE. Direct your vitriol toward CA lawmakers, not Smith & Wesson.
