Has anybody tried carrying a small handgun in one of those soft sided belt mounted compact camera cases? I was looking at some the other day and thought one of the horizontal models with a zip or velcro top opening might do well. It should provide pretty quick access and doesn't scream "gun"

It should work, but my only concern would be keeping anything from getting wedged into the trigger guard. You might want to consider using a pocket holster inside the camera case to ensure safety.

I use a Jagwear-3 in leather for carrying my S&W 3913 plus spare magazine and Kodak Zi8 camera. The leather holds up very well, and the gun is fairly easy to access. I mostly use it when driving in the cross draw arrangement as I find it easy to unzip the case and remove the pistol in a cross draw manner while driving.

I'd use a pocket holster any day rather than a fanny pack (or love handle pack), not that it wouldn't work. There are suitable camera belt packs in all sizes, e.g., LowePro, or ThinkTankPhoto.

There's no danger of snagging the trigger if that's the only thing in the pouch. Same for a pocket holster - nothing else in that pocket.

Yes, but with pocket carry the gun is unavailable when belted in the car. When I pocket carry I always also ankle carry to deal with that deficiency. So if you only wanted to carry one gun the this hip carry makes more sense.
