Hey Gang,
I'll be in the Port Clinton, Ohio area next Thursday and will take in the Camp Perry CMP High Power Rifle competition as a spectator. I've been wanting to go for years now and finally have the chance. I've never been there before and was wondering what to expect. Can you just drive in as a visitor? Anything I should take to make my afternoon more enjoyable? Any info will be appreciated and thanks so much in advance.

Sure Can!

Yup you can be a spectator, and the commercial row has some great buys. Take a folding or camp chair, plenty of sun shade and rain wear!

Can get plenty hot, no place to sit except on the grass and if a storm comes up your going to get soaked. They don't call the match for anything except lightning.

Have a great time. You may want to think about attending the Small Arms Firing School for rifle next year. Starts the two days before the rifle matches, is cheap and great training, plus shooting the Army's rifles, ammunition and you don't have to clean them afterwards.

Might bring your spotting scope or a good pair of binoculars as well....

They will be firing the Leech Cup that morning with team matches and shootoff in the afternoon. 1000yds, 20 shots for record, iron sights. Be prepared for weather- sun and or rain. You can park reasonably close to Viale range where the 1000yd matches take place. Chair and optics good idea. Portolets are nearby. You might want to go by CMP store and look it over(on left going in), NRA store near range control sells t-shirts etc, commercial row has some vendors as well as display of trophys. Limited food and drink around, good idea to take it with you. Hope the weather's nice and enjoy your trip! Lot of history there. World fullbore championships are following the Longrange and Palma matches.

Thanks for the info and tips guys!!! Really appreciate it, and speaking of Walleye I'll be fishing off Lorain with an old school buddy on his boat on Wednesday. Being from Cleveland originally I really miss fishing Lake Erie for Walleye. Good fighters and greater tasting...

I'm not sure if they will have then at the North Store, but the CMP E-store is selling surplus 1911 mags for $8.00/each. I just received mine and I received 10 as new Checkmate 7 round mags that were packaged in 1991.

If you have a 1911, it might be worth your while to see if they are available at the store too.
