Since I’ve moved I convinced SWMBO that WE needed a gun safe. I’ve read that and old machinists trick was to put a block of camphor into your tool chest to keep your tools rust free. I have a couple packs ordered. Anybody use them?

I just use two desiccants that come in boxes and 1 that plugs in to redry along with an electric golden rod (humid Florida) - no rust and no smell

Get a golden rod. They make different sizes depending on safe cubic feet.
I’ve used them for at least 25 years in multiple climates in some damp basements, zero rust.

Get a Golden Rod, as other people stated. Years of no rust and no hassle. Plug them in and no worries ever, they just get warm and dry out the air. Different sizes and you can set them on floor, a shelf, or hang them, what ever works. mikey

Camphor is used to deter wool eating moths. Unless you have wool grips or slings on your guns, I would suggest you use a device to eliminate moisture instead.

Used it in my toolbox and have heard of it being used in tackle boxes---never tried it in a safe though.

Camphor will prevent rust and tarnish. Many use it in cabinets of silver collectibles as well as in toolboxes and gun safes. I learnt this years ago from an old friend who was a WWII veteran and a retired optics technician.

It is getting harder to find, though. You used to be able to find it any any drug store. Nowadays not so much.
