Where there's a will I'm sure there's a way. But most likely it'll have to be home made out of sheet aluminum.

Looking at the inside of the stock hand guard for my Sport there isn't any attachment points for a heat shield, but it looks like if you took a Dremel with a cutting disk you could cut a groove along bases of the six indexing pegs/sockets...

Then form an aluminum sheet to fit in the handguard with flanges on the edges that fit into the grooves like in this picture....

You may need to drill vent holes in the aluminum to help ventilate the barrel.

Wouldn't a standard handguard that already has a heat shield fit? There are probably bazillions of them sitting in people's drawers and closets (who have replaced them with magpuls, etc...)

The idea (for me anyway) would be that you could use the Sport handguard that came with it and not have it heat up as much as it does after a couple mags down the barrel. I replaced mine already, just wondering if I could do something with the (almost) useless thing.

They fit, but they are bigger around than the handguard on the Sport.

S&W uses the tapered profile hand guards on all of their ARs. I haven't measure my OR guards vs. the Sport but I would bet the ware the same width. Most other manufacturers use the wider hand guards and I can't stand those. You can find take off, tapered handguards for sale all over the place for around $12 - $15.

I wasn't aware of this BillyJack. I only had my handguards on my CMMG .22lr upper to compare with the Sport, and the Sport were definitely thinner. I assumed that the Sport were even thinner than the tapered profile ones.

Anyone have some Sport handguards to compare to other S&W tapered handguards?

The original hand guards that came with my Sport never had heat shields. But the Magpul set that I use today has shields built in. To be honest I never liked the tapered guards in the first place. Did not fit my hand right. :)
