I have an opportunity to pick up a used M&P 15-22 at a good price. However, it has the quad rail handguard which I don't like. I see that replacing it isn't hard and have found the tool needed for about $15 on the net.
I would like to replace the handguard with the MOE version. However, when I tried to call S&W for a price, I got a recording saying they are closed due to the bad weather.
Anybody happen to know the going price for the MOE handguard?
I'm trying to determine if its worth it to buy the used rifle and change the handguard or simply buy a new rifle as I want it.
Time is a factor here as I can't leave the seller hanging for too long.

Also open to suggestions on aftermarket handguards.

Just FYI for anybody interested.
I finally got through to S&W. The 15-22 handguard is a proprietary part. They do not sell them to the public.

I bought my 15-22 shortly after they came out about 12 years ago. Didn’t care too much for the quad hand guard that came on the original. At that time there weren’t many after market accessories for the 15-22. I ended up buying 2 military surplus hand guard covers at a gun show. They work great and leaves the top and bottom rails for accessories. Also replaced the original charging handle to better use with the Nikon P-22 scope and use an inexpensive bipod. If you get the used rifle at a great price this could be an option.

I have one with the standard quad rails. I didn't like them either but what I did was install slide on rail covers. Works great.

I figured it up. Sport handguard from Gun Parts Corp plus the tool plus shipping added up to about $60. Slide on rail covers off e-bay, $8. I went with the rail covers.
