Can a magazine cause FTE?

I just took my shield 9 to the range for only it's 2nd time out and I was hoping not to have any FTE's this time. I had 3 the first time out and after a good cleaning and a few more rounds I was hoping to be done with them.

Unfortunately I did have two today, right off the bat. This time I took note that it only seemed to happen when using the 8rd mag. I stopped using the 8, switched to the 7rd and had no more FTE's for the remaining 100 rds I shot.

Did I get a dud magazine? I haven't been shooting that long and I'm not sure if that's possible or is there something else wrong with the brand new shield?

Yes magazines can cause all sorts of problems.

Test all your magazines. If you have function problems with a magazine, get rid of it. One of the many advantages of a 1911 is that the magazines are plentiful and inexpensive. I have 70+ When I get new ones ($10-12 each) I test each one. If there is the slightest problem, I throw it away. No reason to fiddle with it or risk mixing it up with good ones. About one in ten new ones get trashed. If one in use develops problems - out it goes.

This presents problems with more expensive magazines obviously.

Generally, larger capacity magazines are more likely to cause problems, as are aftermarket magazines. ( the guy in the Aurora movie theater was using a 100 round mag which jammed fairly early on causing him to switch to a shotgun - almost certainly reduced the total carnage).

If you're using your pistol for self defense, use the magazine that works. Get rid of the other one. If you can't bring yourself to trash it, at least paint it red or something so you don't inadvertently end up with it in your pistol when reliability matters!

I Agree with Rpg 100%, in my option is it is mostly the springs. you just have to experiment with different Mags and springs. It is fun though and an good excuse to go out to the range!

I agree with RPG, in fact, I'd say magazine issues cause more Cycling, FTE etc issues than anything. Buy yourself a few more mags and toss that one.

Thanks guys. That mag is history!

Any chance S&W would replace it since its a factory mag, less than 2 weeks old?

I'd call, I had a similar issue and the factory sent me a new one and a\the return package.
