My Question: I was told by someone who tells me that S&W will now let you purchase an old but new model revolver, like they used to make in the past, without that extra key safety.
I was going to call S&W about it, but every time I call, I have to wait too long for someone to answer the phone.
Any thoughts about a purchase like this?

Both of the new revolvers I bought in the last year, models 60 & 66 have the lock. It doesn't bother me, but I can understand why it does others. Did you google it?

There are several models that can be purchased without the internal lock, although I believe they are all internal hammer J Frames. Most notably, the 442/642. There are others, and I may be incorrect about the J Frame limitation. Others may be along to add more information before the thread is locked.

IBTL ! ! !

Too all, I thank you for the info. The 442 and the 642 S&W's are very hard to find in any of the gun stores in Illinois. I just did a Google, and I see that there is no "key lock" on the 442 or the 642. Does the 442, and 642 also come in a blue or a black finish? If the law permits S&W not to have a key lock on these 2 revolvers, then why not on all there revolvers again?

A: 442 is black, 642 is stainless.

2: There's no law governing the lock . . .

The 640 (357 magnum) is another example available without the lock. Also 43C in 22lr. I think there is also a 22 mag centennial available without the lock, but I can't remember the model number.

Why not just buy used, if you don't like the models listed in this thread?

I'm not sure if that is true anymore. Last year at a gun show I was looking for a 442/642. I found three. Two of them had locks. One didn't. I bought the one that didn't.
I'm thinking S&W got around to putting locks on everything. :(

How do the stockholders suffer specifically from that particular minutia . . . ?

I believe stock value would exceed current value (more sales) if the IL was not there or at least a version of all models were made without the IL for consumer choice. I know I only own 1 IL gun but would buy several more if IL was not there.
