I have the opportunity to buy this gun for $400. sight unseen with no guarantee and online.

Question is, is it worth the price?
It looks in good condition, but I cannot tell how old this gun is. Can someone identify the vintage? Is this worth the gamble? What is my downside?

Check out the attached pic.

Downside? You'll get screwed out of your cash.

The price isn't so hot and the gun looks like it's been roughed up a bit. Probably a 5906 PD trade-in. You can do better if you look around...

I wouldn't buy anything on line without return privileges spelled out clearly in advance....

Don't do it.

+1 with what Drew said. Does not seem to be a bargain by any stretch and I would think that $400 will purchase a lot of the modern S&W semis. I personally prefer the model 59 in blue. 9mm is not the best self defense cartridge but having 14 rounds just makes me feel better.:D

What Drew said.

Price is too high, and you should get a 3 day inspection with ANY on-line purchase of a used firearm. If the seller was reputable, he would offer that.

The reason the seller won't do it is because the pistol probably looks much worse in person.

Price is way too high for that piece. I have a 5906tsw bought NIB for $300.00 a few years ago. That pistol looks used and abused. Offer the seller $250.00 and that will be about what it is worth. PS: I like my two 9mm (the other is a 3913tsw) for self defense. A good +P self defense round in a quality pistol is all you need. IMHO

It's an early 5903, in rough condition, for $400 I'd pass but for about &275-$300 it'd be a fair deal. I like the steel framed 5906 over the alloy framed 5903...I don't mind the extra weight in order to get the durability.

Please tell us who the dealer is that will not guarentee his online merchandise.

Go to Guns for Sale Buy the SW40VE for 299.00 delivered, get the 50.00 Rebate and don't look back. Have a very nice new gun with warranty for 250.00 and change! Plus whatever your FFL charges for transfer fees. Mine charges 20 bucks and no taxes. Or, you can wait until the SW9VE goes back on sale(which I'm sure it will) and get a nice 9mm. That's what I did and couldn't be happier!
