I've got Robins wanting to build a nest in the brace for the awning over my front door. It's a bad spot cause my timer for the porch light is there. I don't want to hurt the birds but I know from past experience they're pretty determined. Any ideas?? I don't think they can smell.

I suggest check the spot regularly and at the first sign of twigs, nest building, sweep the beginnings away with a broom or similar. Repeat as necessary. They’ll understand quickly, I bet, and choose a less troublesome spot for both parties.

I don't know if they can smell, but when I was a youngster, my mother would put one of those rubber snakes up in the branches to keep the birds out of the cherry tree.

For a song bird the rubber snake would be better.

They don’t really smell.
It has nothing to do with no opposable thumbs to apply deodorant.
