It really depends on what you intend to do with the rifle. For plinking and simple HD, it's hard to beat the Sport. For a duty gun, get the Tac (I don't think any agencies will allow the Sport for a duty gun - I could be wrong though).

If you plan to buy the Sport and the upgrade the hell out of it (quad rail, etc), then it might be cheaper/easier to just get the Tac.

I know it sounds horribly cliche, but it all depends on what YOU want.

I don't think so. Especially if it's the first AR-15-type rifle you've ever had.

All you get with the "tactical" version is a load-assist (which you don't need) a dust cover (which you don't need) a quad rail (which I have, but don't really need, per se) and instead of the standard gas block/front sight, you get a flip-up MBUS sight. The tactical version also weighs a half pound more.

Why is it on this forum that the word "sight" always auto-links to a retail opportunity? Is this Disney World?

I have both, and as of right now, I'd recommend the tactical if for no other reason than it has the 1:8 5R barrel and the Sport doesn't anymore. All of the other features the T are nice and the quad rail is something that is worth having for most of us. Not to mention that it has a free floating barrel, too.

If the barrels were equal then it would be a toss up as to what you're going to do with it, but I think the extra 300 is money well spend on the T these days.

I bought the M&P15 T about a month or so ago for $820. It was from a police supply shop, budspolicesupply.com to be exact. If you are military I'd check them out to see if they still have one. As far as the rifle goes, I love mine, well worth the money I paid for it. It eats all of the "****" steel cased ammo without a hick-up.
