I have one of the newer 9L's that were re-issued (for LEO's as I understand) a few years after the 2011 discontinuing of this model. It has the little square tabs filling in the holes where the thumb safety would go (in fact, I just noticed that one of them is missing).
I've read that this has been done before, with others claiming it can't be done. I'm also reading the S&W is less than cooperative in this, for possible legal reasons, but I may give their tech department a call on Monday and hope to get some solid info.
There's a company (Speed Shooter Specialties) that sells the lever and detent ball spring pretty inexpensively. Here's the links....

M&P Manual Safety Lever [1960] - $12.50 : Welcome to Speed Shooter Specialties

M&P Manual Safety Lever Detent Ball and Spring [2022] - $12.50 : Welcome to Speed Shooter Specialties

Also, from what I'm reading, installing a safety is dependant on having the right sear block, but I haven't been able to dredge up any more detail, so I don't exactly know what to look for in my pistol.
BTW, this pistol's test-fire date is Dec '14.
Any info, or even a push in the right direction, is much appreciated....

Hmm, I would've thought the M&P sub-forum, on THE Smith & Wesson forum, would be the ideal place to ask this question.
But nobody'd got nuthin', eh?
I guess I should stick to asking about FMJ's vs HP's in my carry gun, or whether I should get the Shield with or without the safety ! :D

Or perhaps we have other things to do than wait for questions like this.

As long as you have the right sear housing and frame, yes, you can add the parts for the safety.

Other M&Ps have sear housing intended for the internal lock. You can not add the safety to those models.

Sounds like you have the right one. You will need to pull the other block out. Add the detent and lever, reinstall the housing and Bob's your uncle.

I have bought other spare parts from Speedshooters. Good place, good service.

If the frame has the cut outs for the thumb safety, it can be added. However, it doesn't make the gun safer and is completely superfluous.

I have thumb safeties on all my M&P's except my range guns, I personally like it that way.
Your opinion is noted, but my opinion is what I go by.

I too ordered the thumb safety for my M&P VTac

And that is why they added the thumb safety; people believe it makes the gun safer. So they added it and sold more guns. Use it in good health.
