can I buy brand new original grips from smith for my 586-2?

my gun overall is around a 98% gun blueing and grips but I've toyed with the idea of having my older guns redone.

if I have smith reblue it I want new grips are these still available? mine are the original wood square butt

I know theres repalcements that aren't the exact thing but I'm talking about exactly the way it came grips

My advice: DON'T redo the gun and stocks. Leave as is. It will be worth much more if you don't fool with it.

found these on that site they look pretty DARN close to my originals...are they exact? they look it to me but I didn't go downstairs and get my 586 out to compare.

the medallions look a little higher than i remember thats all I see plus not knowing how well the finish and color would match up

To refinish a gun or not to do it will be an ongoing discussion for ever. I believe it is up to the individual, but understand, you will affect collector value by doing it and you will have more money (most likely) in the gun than it is worth. As far as your grips are concerned, if you want to keep them original to the gun, have them refinished. There are guys on this forum that do a beautiful job at a very modest price.

one question how does he refinish the spikey center checkered area of the grips? mine are pretty crip but one small are is dented. does he fix this like new? if so sounds like hes the way to go

The grips you are showing are the "football" relief type (extractor Relief), the SWSC book says the 586 sq. btt. should have "speedloader cut" style grips.

If it's 98% why would you want to redo anything? You couldn't even pick it up after that without worrying about the 1 or 2 % finish you might loose.

I have to agree with johnny3, the grips that came on your gun would have had the speed loader cutout instead of the "football" relief, as long as they are for a K or L frame they will work, just make sure they are not a N frame as they will not fit, as for reblueing it is something you will have to decide for yourself, if a few marks on the orig. finish bother you then by all means reblue it.

The issue with refinishing as I see it ( and this is only my opinion) is that these refinished guns eventually get sold or traded off. Many times the story of the refinish is not mentioned or forgotten. I have one of these that was sold to me as original finish and when it arrived, although it looked good, the fact that it was refinished made it less desirable. I suppose it will grow on me but it is unfortunate. Ninety-eight percent guns do not need to be refinished.

Yes, those are the repro grips from the Gun Grip website he looked up.

Correct grips for a 686-2 would be like these below, with a speedloader cut as mentioned and also wood "washers" inside for locating the upper grip in the frame. Your options are to get some from 1) the classifieds here 2) Ebay 3)Gubroker, or 4) have yours restored by VM, DWFAN, or others.

If it is only the finish that is worn or peeling, that can be easily stripped and tung oil rubbed in. Detailed discussion/instructions can be found by searching in the 'smithing section for "grip restoration" or "restoring grips."

When totally restoring the grip, wood has to be added in a matrix of resin and shavings, so the grip can not be re-finished with oil like original - it has to be painted to simulate the original finish. DWFAN did a pictorial description of how all this is done recently in the pre-45 section:

Unless your gun or grips are pretty worn, it just may not be worth restoring them. As mentioned, buyers prize a 98% gun in original condition much more than a refinished gun/grip combination. However, if you want it "perfect" that is the way to go.

I looked at my gun u guys are right those grips i put a pic up of aren't quiet exact.

to help make up my mind i'm gonna post a pic of my gun and my rifle u guys can see yourself if you would reblue or not.
