My oldest daughter is married to a career Air Force Sgt. She has finally decided to start carrying and get her CCW. But, she lives in Alabama and her state of residence is SC. Can she get a resident permit in both states? If not, which state does her permit need to come from? SC does nor share reciprocity with Al, but are there exceptions for military?

Can anyone recommend an NRA instructor around Montgomery?

She will be home in a week or so and we're going to pull a few out of the safe for her to shoot and see what she is comfortable with. If she's like her mom, it'll be the 3913 and 4" K frame.

It's enough to make a daddy proud.

You will have to check the laws in AL to make that determination. If he was stationed here in Missouri and she lived here with him, then Missouri law would allow for them to both obtain Missouri CCW endorsements. I am not sure if AL has the same type of laws or not.

The laws vary from state to state. When I was on active duty with the Air Force, stationed in Mississippi, I had a Mississippi Firearms Permit which permits CCW. I went to a lengthy (7 month) school in Texas; as soon as I had been there for 1 month, I was able to purchase long guns using my Mississippi driver's license and a copy of my military orders assigning me to a Texas base. After 3 months, I could purchase handguns. Texas does have reciprocity with Mississippi, so I didn't worry about getting a Texas permit for the time I was there.

Military dependents do not automatically get resident priviledges in every state. The permanent solution to her problem is to get a permit from her home state of SC AND a FL permit, which is widely recognized and remains valid as you move around.
Alabama does not issue non-resident licenses, so it would expire when she moved.

Here's a site that links to state laws:

I've thought about the SC resident permit and NH non-resident. That would cover her in all the neighboring states she visits and AL.

Just get an AL driver's lisc and permit. I'm a military dependent. I'm from MI. When I moved to WA to live with my wife, I was a WA resident. Now that I'm in VA, I'm a VA resident. I have VA ID and a VA carry permit.

My wife simply has a VA DL and permit as well.

My understanding was that spouses simply become a resident of whatever state that they are living in.

If she lives on base, there will be other issues involving actually carrying the gun.

If she maintains her SC residency, she can get a SC permit, but she would have to get a NH non-resident permit to carry in AL. Since SC doesn't recognize non-resident permits, that's about the only way she could be legal in both states.

Right?

Right. The problem with changing residency with every move is the lapse period to get the new permit (up to 6 months). UT and FL have the widest acceptance, but NH is cheaper.

Tell her to call the local (Alabama) Sheriffs office, and ask, it won't hurt. I think she will qualify. We tend to be very understanding in this state.
