Can we still get K frame "original" grips from S&W?

I recently got a 1980's era model 10-8 and it came with a rubber grip so I'm looking to get the original wood grips that originally came with it to make it look more original.

In my searching I found that on the official S&W website they have them ... in stock and supposedly brand new for $37.50 here:
Product: K/L Square Dymondwood Checkered Service
Is this correct or am I missing something? Because I see numerous posts here from people looking for the same grips, so I figure I must be missing something because if we can get these grips brand new directly from S&W still then I'm guessing people would. And if they are not then there must be something I'm missing.

So are the K frame default grips on the S&W website not correct or something? Has anyone here bought them? If you have can you post some pics and tell us how they are please?

The stocks on the S&W website are laminated stocks, called Diamond Wood. There are not the same as originally came on your gun. Try doing a search online for "S&W Grips"

Good Luck

Ah OK. The original grips were solid walnut or something like that and these are a laminate. That makes sense.
Are they otherwise the same though? I mean dimensionaly?

And I did, of course, do a search for S&W K frame grips, but you get the phone book. There are a ton of grips to choose from and more places selling them. But I was curious first as to why the obvious choice of directly from S&W was so obviously NOT chosen by members here. Or at least it seems.

All K frame SB wood stocks 'should' be the same dimensions, but there was just enough variation so that you may buy a set that will not fit your gun. They will be walnut Magna style, rounded or modified bottom edges, checkered but no diamonds around the stock screw.

If you do a Google Custom search here on the Forum there will be plenty of photos of them. Good luck in your search.

So then the ones for sale at S&W are not the same dimensions as the original OR even made of the same stuff or look like the originals. Well that explains why no one buys them. ;)

Thank you all for the replies. Very much appreciated.
I got a few PM's of members selling and I'll check the WTS section too.

I Remember A Post Naming Numrich Gun Parts

As a source for the official S&W Stocks. They were not the diamond center nor new but are used K frame Magnas, both the Plain Clothes and the Standard Flat Bottom Magnas for $8.50/pair.

This is in the "For What It's Worth" category. I've had good success at finding pre-owned grips/stocks on this forum, e-bay and Gun Broker. Mainly the search is for ones which are period correct period correct. Most of those will reasonably fit without issue. Depending on the gun and the look I want there are instances where aftermarket shoes on a particular gun look like they just belong. As to your pocketbook and what you want e-bay is a good source. In addition there are some really fine stocks available from great craftsmen some of whom are members of this forum. Always remember, it's your gun dress her like you want to. hardcase60

original OEM S&W magna grips will most likely have a sequence of numbers on the inside grip panel that is identical to the serial number of the revolver that was original to the grips. you can ask a seller what the number sequence is on the grips for sale and try to come close to the serial number of your revolver.
for a seamless look at the end of the day, i suggest that you find a set of grips that have wear that is congruent with the wear on your revolver.

Well that would be pretty expensive because this thing looks like it was brand new in the box. There is virtually zero wear on this gun so I would need practically brand new looking grips.

I have a sale in the works right now with a member here via pm. The pics look great so hopefully my quest is done for the factory original look.

I think I am also going to get some more fancy looking ones for the heck of it because this gun looks so nice. Those will be really just for me, and with so many options it is going to take a while.

Thanks all.

when I had my model 19 refinished recently, I requested a pair of new grips. I got a set of solid walnut with diamond centers. This was in JAN '16.

Hmm. That sounds nice. Might it be that if a person calls on the phone he could order something like that?

Those are some excellent grips you're trying to get. I looked too w/difficulty online and luckily at The Nation's Gun Show in Chantilly, Va I saw a pair of originals. The guy was asking $100, which I paid because you can't find them! Here's a pic of them on my 686. The pair I bought I put on my 27-2.

Those are beautiful, but those are not what came on mine I think. Mine is a 1980's model 10 so I believe it came with smaller grips that had a rounded bottom that did not extend beyond the frame.
I have some on the way so hopefully I will be able to post a pic soon.

Pardon the error. I see though, from what you describe, that any of those original wood grips from the 80's are hard to come by. You are correct - those that I described are the Goncalo Alves for square butt guns. I consider the $100 well spent ....

I ordered a set from S&W for an older model 14 ($37.50)
They fit fine, but look a little odd because the wood is so light.

Thanks for the info. Two questions though ...
1. Are they solid wood or diamond wood (laminate)?
2. Are they thinner or different size/design than originals?

Can you post a pic by any chance? I'd love to see what the brand new ones look like.

About a year ago I bought some grips from S&W. They are K/L Square Dymondwood Checkered Service. They're laminated. I'm going to include some pics. Someone above asked if they were thinner than the original magnas. These are 1.121 in. measured where the screw goes through. I have some original magnas on an N frame, they're 1.33 in. measured where the screw goes through. The grip frame on the mdl 19 and the one on the mdl 28 are nearly exactly the same thickness.
I'm not crazy about 'em.

S&W used to make their wooden stocks in house. Some folks referred to it as the "carpentry shop." I believe they closed it in the 1990's and began buying their wood stocks from other, independent stock and accessory companies. This began with Pachmayr and Uncle Mike's rubber stocks and evolved into buying their wood stocks, as well. It was a matter of economics.
