Can you believe a motor Cycle killed this HUGE GRIZZLY.

This grizzly was hit by a Harley on Lolo Pass between Lolo , MT and Kooskia , ID.
Look at the claws on that sucker!

The biker made it thru three days in the hospital...!!! The hog's a wreck!
Lesson learned : Don't go Bear Hunting with a Harley, they don't last but one hunt...!!!

I got this as an e-mail the other day and wanted to post it here. I have no idea how to get an e-mail print from point A to point B.

Having said that, it is hard to believe that a bear that size could be killed by being struck by a motorcycle. That is one big mutha! It's even harder to believe that the guy on the bike survived.

This griz was taken out by a Dodge pickup near Lincoln, MT., and was known to the locals. After an agreement with the wildlife folks, he is on display in Lincoln after a full body mount was done. If you google the Great Falls Tribune you should be able to find the article about the taxidermy. They had to take out the picture window in the building to get the mount in. He was just put on display last fall after the taxidermy was done, I've got the original pics of the pickup somewhere and I'll post them if I can find them. The dodge p/u held up pretty well, shame about the bear though, he is a hell of a griz.

pretty sure I don't want to run into him when I'm out hunting.

Here are some pictures of a Grizzly that was hit on Hwy 200 near Lincoln on Oct. 17, 2007. They estimated it was over 750 pounds. Kinda filled the 8'0" bed of the truck

It was a big deal for the people of Lincoln to get the mount back. There were people all over the western part of MT that wanted that mount in their town.

The only way a Harley would have killed this bear is if Chuck Norris was on it and he parked it and got off of it to take care of the bear.

Not to hijack, but as a kid (MANY years ago!), I recall seeing a big griz mounted at a museum in Browning, MT. Anyone familiar with the story of that one?
 
Used to date a guy that bought a Harley...he was a cowboy when I met him, then he got Harley fever. Not too soon after, one of his buddies bought one, too, and we used to go ride on the weekends.
We had cruised up to the mountains and stopped at the saloon, where one of their friends was playing in the band. We sat there for a while, and the buddy told us he was going to go a bit further up the road and see what was going on there, and he'd be back.
So, he took off. Some time later, he comes in and sits down, orders a beer.
I said to boyfriend, "I didn't hear him pull up, did you?" He said no, he didn't either, then mentions it to his friend. The guy replied, "that's because I got out of a pickup."
"got out of a pickup?"
"Yeah, I caught a ride."
"where's your bike?"
"Up the road, chained to a tree."
"Why is your bike chained to a tree?"
"Because I couldn't get it started, so I had to leave it."
"Why wouldn't it start?"
"Because I hit a bear."
No kidding...they went back to get it and it was wrecked, and there was bear fur stuck in some of the parts. The kind with silvery ends on the hair....Only this guy could HIT a bear, not just any bear, but a grizzly, no less. It apparently hurt the bike more than the bear, because it was no where around.
 
Years ago I had a picture of a big Harley buried up to its rear wheel in the side of a Volkswagen Beetle. I think the report said it was doing an estimated 90 mph when it T-boned the Bug.

Lot of kinetic energy there.....
 
I know for a fact that a Yamaha 250 street bike doing about 50mph will knock over a small buffalo. It will get up and walk away, the bike didn't fare as well.

Not a Harley expert, but don't many HD models weigh in at 700-800 lbs? That is a lot of weight and almost equal to what the bear weighed. Any idea what happened to the bike or the rider?
 
I like that story, Sammi. I think your friend who ran into a bear but didn't comment until it was pried out of him is textbook example of "laconic."

My Harley weighs in right at 900 pounds. Whether a motorcycle killed this bear or not is not the point . . . a 900 lb motorcycle traveling at 60+ MPH could absolutely do a number on a grizz. Wouldn't do much good for the rider, though.
 
I retired from the MT Hwy Patrol back in 2007 after 22+ years. The Lincoln area was a bit west of my normal patrol area but I still did a lot of work out there when the resident Trooper was off or on leave. The article did the incident justice. That bear WAS fairly well known by the locals and was also quite intelliigent. If there was a feeding opportunity to be had...he took advantage of it. I heard a lot of stories from locals as well as the Fish & Game Wardens about this bear.

I investigated a 500# bear hit by a car years back. And that was a big bear. This guy at 800+ would be pretty amazing.

The Physics of a 900# bike hitting a bear will not work out as expected either. Bears, elk, cattle, horses , mtn goats, bighorn sheep and domestic pigs are VERY well muscled and do FAR more damage too a vehicle than one would expect given their weight. It is not unusual to arrive at an accident scene and despite a totalled vehicle...have to still shoot the bear, or horse. They can be very tough.

Lincoln is a nice little town and when mentioned many recall Ted K the Unabomber lived there. I will always recall our resident Trooper out there who hit a mature MOOSE at speed many years ago. He remarkably survived,despite the ENTIRE moose traveling through the car and ending up in the back seat.

(900 lb Harley @ 60 MPH.)
