This pistol belongs to my brother in law. He has had it since he was a kid and it has much more sentimental value than anything else. He wants to pass this down to his son. Years ago the main spring broke on it. He asked me if I could help find him fix it...

I'm sure it's a long shot but wanted to see if I can figure out what it is in an effort to source another main spring. So, any idea what this is, or better yet where I might find a main spring? Looks like a German knock off of some sort it is chambered in 22lr...it has "Herbert Schmidt" stamped under the grips and another stamping that says Germany...

Herbert Schmidt SA .22's were an inexpensive pot-metal frame gun imported from Germany in the late 50's. Don't tell your BIL I said that. :o

Bob's Gun Shop in Royal AK should be able to help with a new spring. Fit the spring and wear leather gloves when test shooting it. Most of these cheap post-WWII German exports spit like a ticked off llama!

Herbert Schmidt (W Germany) was a lower quality but more than servicble revolver made on an alloy frame and imported in pretty good numbers into the US under number of different names (Excam, Buffalo, and others).

Parts from one Brand will fit the others, sometimes with a bit of fitting.
Lots of fancy editions were sold with plated cylinders and bbls, ect but the actions are all the same.
They used advertised a lot in Shotgun News when that was still the go-to place to buy guns before the Intro-Net days.
They made a 357 S/A also. Probably others.

Here's one source for parts.
Many Single Action Revolver Parts, Bob's Gun Shop, Hawes Single Action Pistol parts. Hawes Large Frame Single Action Pistol parts. Hawes Small Frame Single action Pistol parts. Dakota Single Action Factory Pistol Parts. Cattleman Single Action Pistol

Scroll down in the center column to the ..
BUFFALO .S.A. .22 German
Small Frame. Known also as
HS-21,Texas Scout,,,ect ect.
Those are the H Schmidt revolves and that name is listed in the mix.
The small schematic will enlarge when you click on it.
The hammer mainspring is part #40.

Other parts places may have a replacement too. But this is a start.

Get 'er back shootin' again..

added.
Here's Numrichs complete list of parts for the small frame Herbert Schmidt 22 SA revolver
Includes new aftermarket mainspring and used factory spring.

Here's an Excam TA76 used mainspring from Numrich
Should fit, might need a little work to do so.
Mainspring, Used Factory | Gun Parts Corp.
They also list an aftermarket New mfg spring also if you check their entire listing of Excam TA76 parts.

It s a nice looking gun. Hope your nephew enjoys it.

...check out Ebay...search: "Gun Parts Herbert Schmidt"...

...there are three main springs there...but one comes pre-broken...so be careful...

I haven't seen one of those in donkey's years. I almost bought one once, but was leery of the frame material. Probably needlessly.

I hope you can get that one up and running.
