That's how they tell people to learn morse code, not by each letter but by the sound of the whole word.

I wonder how much grant money Cambridge U. spent to figure that out?
 
I don't think this has anything to do with sounds, but with the way our brains organize and process clusters of visual symbols to extract meaning from them.
 
I believe that's how a program called "Program For Achievement In Reading" worked. Words were taken in whole, and they used a series of slides to teach the student to read faster, and with greater comphrehension.

That program was taught over 45 years ago.

My point was that the human brain will take part of what it sees, or hears, and fill in what it thinks should be there. This is one reason people who are scared will see things that aren't there. Their eye sees something that resembles something frightening and their imagination creates the rest of the picture around it. The same thing happens with sounds, if your ears think they hear someting in particular your brain will make it real.

In other words it not just visual symbols, it's audible symbols too. And I would say the other senses as well.
