Can you wash ball caps?

I've tossed my Braves hat in the washing machine a number of times over the 20 years I've owned it... it's perfectly fine. I always let it air dry though.

If you wash it in the washer, don't place it on top of the thing that sticks up in the middle for the fabric softner.....the bill will throw water all over your utility room floor!!!

I bought one of those plastic cap washing frames off Fleabay for under $5. I ran an old ballcap through the dishwasher using the directions included with the frame. I let the cap air dry in the frame overnight. It came out perfect - as good as new.

Just wait...Florida gave you guys everything you could handle :D

No, that was Arkansas ;) Razorback here...not a gaytor.

oh yea, the reason for the post....I use both the dishwasher and regular washer.....take it out wet and wear it. Fits like a well used ball glove after an hour or so.

I just had to wash a hat that smelled of cat. Put in a bucket, some detergent, water, let it soak. Ran it under the shower to rinse, air dry, came out fine.
I use Oxyclean in my regular laundry, good stuff.

I've always used the dishwasher method and a always been less than impressed. The last hat I washed was one of my favorites, a medium-dark green hat from the Blue Lagoon Dive Shop in Truk Lagoon, Micronesia. I put it in the dishwasher with nothing else in it and just a bit of soap, when I removed it after the dishwasher had run its course, the hat had turned orange! I dunno how green can turn into orange, but it did and is now ugly as hell.

I take mine into the shower with me - using a wash cloth and zest bar soap to scrub it up then hang it on the shower knob overnight so it can drip dry - works great, keeps it's shape and comes out clean every time. The trick is not to soak it to long - then it retains it's shape. Just get it wet - scrub it up and rinse, then hang it up.

Well, thanks to all for advice. I took one hat and used some spray and wash stuff on it. Washed it in the sink and rinsed it off. Took a small plastic garbage bag and stuffed it full of crumpled up paper. (actually a pretty good simulation of my head including contents) Stuffed the bag into the hat to shape it and hung it out on the back porch. We shall see.

I used the above method and it worked pretty good. I washed a blue one yesterday. Today I wash my beloved "greenie". I think I spotted a camo hat laying smashed up on the truck floor this morning, maybe I can save it. A lot of interesting responses from you all. Thanks.

Had I known you like caps I would have sent you all of mine.

I had Ruger, Hornady and a bunch of others. They give me a headache and I will not advertise for companies.

I have several Gator/UF caps can't have those however.

No! You cannot wash a ball cap. A ball cap is supposed to be dirty and sweaty, just like athletic shoes.

I've worn a ball cap (Cubs) all my life. I purchase them from the New Era Cap Co. in Elmira, NY. They are fitted caps and last forever. Some are bleached almost gray (from the original blue) and all have salt lines (sweat).

Washing a ball cap is un-American as is mentioned somewhere in the constitution.

I would modify that to say that WEARING a ball cap is un-American except for use in shooting sports that require wearing ear muffs that fit over the top of the head. In other situations, the proper headgear is a hat that has a full 360 degree brim. But, I should mention, my skin is super sun-sensitive.
