I worked with a trooper back in the 80's who medically retired because of several bad knee surgeries. He had a custom hardwood cane made, and spent several years taking some form of stick fighting martial arts.

We used to joke with him about taking a cane to a gun fight. Then one day a couple of us attended a demonstration he put on at the school he had been attending.

I got to say I was frankly amazed, and would not want to be within his reach with anything, including a gun. He still carried a gun for those times the bad guy might be a bit farther away, but he was certainly no "victim waiting to happen" with that cane in his hands.

I've made several short staffs - walking cane - from 1" round hickory cut to length and 1" copper plumbing pieces for the handle. I use a 90* with a short piece of 1" and an end cap.

Broke up a fight with one. Couple derelicts were beating each other over the head with cement pieces right in the driveway of the gas station I was going into.

Stepped out of the car, gathered the staff from the trunk, started walking up to them with purpose while moving the stick around like a martial artist and they seemed to stop.

One ran away, the other challenged me, so the tip of the staff ended up touching his collar bone at the throat like magic and I believe he heard his mama calling. He couldn't get out of there fast enough.

Got a standing ovation from all the customers (@ 10 people) who had been watching the fight in total shock. They were literally open mouthed watching.

You'd a thought the station would have given me a free soda...

:)

Go about everywhere with my "special' walking stick. Black locust with an elk antler burr an the end from a shed I found while bow hunting years gone by. I knew it would work on something! I have used it to beat dogs with that have attacked my lab while out walking. (more for the other dogs protection as she is super nice and friendly until a dog bites her. She has taken down a pitty and a German Shepard. Hate to see any dog get seriously hurt)

I was driving back from Florida a few years ago, and stopped at "Smokey Mountain Knife Works". Really interesting store.

Anyway, I ended up buying one of these. It is not a toy. I have cut through good sized saplings with it. The aluminum shaft is a weapon in itself. The blade is very heavy duty. After all the cutting I have done, the blade is still very sharp.

Watch the video to see what it is capable of doing.

BUT.... I am certainly not advocating using one of these as a weapon. I do not know what the laws are anywhere but where I'm at, and I don't think there is a lot of case law regarding the use of these things.

But, I keep mine in the back of my car, and have never had to use it yet!! But even if I need a cane, it is pretty stout in that role as well.

Best Regards, Les

Due to circumstances, some of which were beyond my control, but most of which are due to becoming to soon old and too late smart, I have had to use a cane off and on for about ten years. I have two or three, made of sturdy bamboo and hickory and one that's some kind of metal. Have used the hickory and the bamboo on some dogs that tried to be much to friendly while my wife and I were out walking. When those dogs rush out now I just lift the cane and they hit the back yard where they live!

Neat thing is that I am old enough that no one would suspect I have a cane for anything but it's usual purpose. I can tell you that a good stick can deal amazingly serious damage, and it gives you additional reach that really comes in handy. You gotta be willing to use it without hesitation and with all your power and might, but intelligently in the process. Poke someone in the eye with the tip and see what happens! Leaves time for a good follow up! They say violence is not the answer, but when there is no other choice, violence is the only answer ... especially if it is sudden and fierce! In two hands, it makes a better block for a blow or a knife than an arm does, and then it can be transitioned quickly for an offensive use.

I don't carry it always these days because it requires a free hand, but truth to tell, I feel kind of naked without it. It's a great comfort, plus I can lean on it when I'm waiting and on my feet. I learned to carry my EDC on my left side while using the cane so I didn't have to switch hands with the cane or drop it to draw. Not a hard transition to make and I'm better off for it.

A determined person, young or old, is a formidible opponent. But when an old man takes the offensive quickly and smartly with a good cane, it generally has a very benficial and disturbing effect on a predator!! Knowing where and how to apply the cane makes a big difference. Training is available, both in person and online. Like all training, some is better than others, but it's worth a look! And you can take your cane places you can't take your EDC and you won't get a second look, especially if you walk like I do!!

At 71 I use a cane, but am too wabbly w/o its assistance to consider fighting w/it, besides I have no training and would only use it as a last resort.
