Canned Dog Food Shortage?

Just the other day I was a YouTube Shooter Video.
He shot a can of Dog Food.
I was surprised to see the can jump straight up about 6-8 feet.

I went to another store today, the canned dog food shelves there were also nearly empty. The canned cat food area was also depleted, but not as bad the dog food area. Plenty of dry cat and dog food was available though.

Supplies of canned pet foods (and the refrigerated Fresh Pet brand) have been up and down since the pandemic began. The shelves are never full. Sometimes almost completely bare. Sometimes maybe half the varieties are available.

We got a wake up call 7 or 8 years ago when the poisoned Chinese dog food scare hit. We keep a year's supply of of food on hand for our cat.

I've been buying canned cat food for our cat by the case from Amazon for a while now. He's a typically fussy cat who only wants one particular brand and flavor, and since the price on Amazon was about the same as our local market it was easier that way. When I got to the bottom layer I'd order another case.

The price was always right around $18 for 24 cans, but yesterday the cheapest of the 4 or 5 vendors on Amazon wanted $37 for it.

It was still 75 cents a can at the market, so today I bought all 24 cans that were on the shelf. He eats some dry food too, but if he can't have his can of wet food every day he's going to be one unhappy camper.

It seems like the shortages cycle through various products at random.

We fed our dogs Dry Old Roy dog food for their entire lives and each of them outlived the life expectancy for their breed, a couple of them by years
