Well, I've closed on a dandy piece of mountain property near Marion, Virginia, close to Mount Rogers National Recreation Area, and bordering the Jefferson National Forest. It's 39 acres of property with a modest three bedroom, two bath house. The property has it all, four acres of pasture, an overgrown Christmas tree farm, and many cleared acres were the property was logged seven years ago. And, bordering the Jefferson National Forest gives me many more acres, square miles more like, to roam. The Appalachian Trail is about 3 miles away...

My wife and I have saved and searched for a private retreat like this for two years, and we'll be moving onto it slowly within the next few weeks. Things went much faster than anticipated once we put in an offer on the place.

Room for shooting and hunting! Ours is the only cleared land on the whole mountain, so game is attracted to it like you read about. Once I clear some scrub, I'll have at least a 300 yard shot.

Pic of the house, pasture land and overgrown Christmas Trees visible:

Logging trails and logged area:

Back side of the Christmas tree farm, logging trail heading up the mountain. This will be the start of my shooting range, this straight section of trail is 150 yards long:

So, the only down side is I need to buy some gear: A strong chain saw for felling and cutting fire wood (the house has electric heat and a wood stove), a tractor to mow/bush hog and maintain the many logging trails on the property. The trails haven't been maintained for two years, but the seller drove me all over the place in his Jeep, so with a little work every inch of the acreage will be reachable by vehicle.

Look for some photos in the future of game, deer, bear and turkey!

Congratulations. It looks like heaven to me. I'm primarily a traditional bowhunter so that place would be right up my alley if I were younger.

Congratulations, nice piece of property. Thats a dream of mine as well, to return to the land.
I grew up 40 miles from the nearest town, hated it as a teen , but would love to go back now.

That's sweet, beautiful country setting. You could have a yearly forum camp out there, we'd love to visit with you. Enjoy you're new life that's way different then before. Remember to keep in touch and update us. Larry

Love that area Canoe-dude! I've spent a lot of time at Grayson Highlands St. Park, been to the top of Mt. Rogers a couple times, biked the Va. Creeper Trail a few times, had a flat fixed in Damascus. Best wishes for you!

I live in the Tidewater area and am quite fed up with the ever increasing crowds, traffic(mostly rude anal orafices), crime and constant noise...We plan to get out of here asap when my wife retires...Not all of Virginia is a good place to live these days. The part you are moving to is a very good place. I spent a lot of pleasant days hiking, camping and hunting in the Mt Rodgers area and know Marion well...Congratulations on your move. I am thinking New Mexico or Arizona for us...Enjoy your new life!

Congratulations, Canoeguy, you need something like a JD Gator or one of the other brands, though they aren't cheap. I like them better then atv's seat two side by side or get extra seating, and can carry more plus a trailer. Heck you can even enclose them for the winter. Or find a old beater 4X4 and put farm use on it.

Looks like a great place for those of us looking to escape the Peoples' Republic of Maryland! Congratulations on your purchase, and may you have many, many happy years there... :)
