I bought my first digital camera in Jan. 2003 (a 1.3 MP Olympus point and shoot that was on closeout at a local Wolf Camera store). In early 2008, I decided it was time to get a new digital camera. I spent a lot of time reading Popular Photography and other magazines as well as web pages like the photography blog and dpreview. I have read and re-read 1000s of camera tests and reviews.

I was leaning towards a DSLR like the Canon Rebel xsi (or the newer Rebel 500D) but after talking to a good friend, who reminded me that sometimes less is more, I ended up getting a Canon SD 880 IS Powershot because it best suits my needs. I don't shoot sports, live action, etc. A DSLR made no sense for my shooting needs.

After seeing these reviews, I ordered my camera from buydig:

As stated in the photographyblog test, "The Canon . . . PowerShot SD880 IS Digital ELPH is probably the best-designed IXUS to date, both in the aesthetic and the functional sense."

So, how did I do? From everything I've read, the Canon Powershot cameras are top-notch.

Top flight cameras. This was taken with a 3 year old SD600:

You made a very wise decesion. I also purchased the Canon SD880 (actually I bought two, one for myself, and one for the Wife). I based my purchase on Ken Rockwell's review.
I read many reviews, and the Canon SD880 fit exactly what I needed in a small camera.

Great pic, RonJ. I hope to take pictures like that.

Thanks, whitecoyote. Everything I read about the 880 said it was a great camera. I got mine for $246.50 (no tax and no shipping) at buydig.

I should have my new camera in a week or so.

My 5th digital camera, started with an 850,000 pixel Sanyo in 1998, but now have a 2 year old Canon SD600. It is a great little camera. If the new models are droppin in price, I might have to upgrade again. The only thing I wish my SD600 had was more zoom capability. I've been to a few airshows and the 3x optical zoom doesn't do it for the long shots.

I've been looking for the SD880 locally but have never found one. They can all "order one in right away"....

Trying to replace my antique steam powered Sony Cybeshot DSC-P10...was GREAT cutting edge in it's day. Even Radio Shack has a seizure when I try to order a battery for it now though.

Still works, and the video clips I can run with sound, in a bar-of-soap size package, were tops not so long ago. Even had great sharpness blown up to 12x18, better than the best glass lenses I ever had.

Sigh....so many choices...but the 880 sure looks good to me.

Any owner have anything to add pro or con???

m657, there are a lot of reviews of the 880. I have read all of them. You cannot go wrong with this camera. Although this camera is running $275-300 at many places, I got mine at buydig for $246.50 with no shipping and no tax. Can't beat that price. The Ken Rockwell test is well worth reading.
