Hello all,

Where in the world can I find a nice, hell, even deluxe set of real walnut grips, with the "old school" hand checkering grips, with the diamonds over the screw hole? These things were works of art, and apparently no longer exist.

I am basically trying to dress up my 3" Model 65. It sports Pachmayr's compact professional rubber grips for everday carry use, but there is something about figured walnut that just really speaks to me. There is a ton of grips out there for converting RB's to SB's, but nothing really for RB's.

What would be ideal in my eyes, would be to shave down a factory set of Ladysmith-Rosewood grips (with the added bonus of genuine S&W medallions!) to smooth them and make them similar in (to Pachmayr's) thickness profile, refinish them, and keep the "factory" look with the S&W medallions.

Can the S&W factory manufacture a set of semi-fancy or even better, figured walnut grips w/medallions? And, do they still have the capability to hand checker grips? Let's face it: the factory K-frame round butt grips that you see for sale on Ebay and Gunbroker are enormously thick, chipped, and checkered with what appears to be a dull, die stamped checkering blank that gouges out a border around the crappy checkering!

Any info on S&W produced or other custom grip maker that can produce figured walnut, K-Frame RB, hand cut checkered grips would be most appreciated!! Factory medallions would be a huge plus! Thanks in advance gentlemen.

Remember: life's too short to own and shoot ugly guns!

Keep doing searches for K frame S&W grips on eBay. The S&W diamond grips made up until 1968 were very high quality with sharp checkering and as good as anything made by the custom grip makers. They come up all the time and every now and then you can get a great deal.

Gentlemen,

Will do. I will check out Kevin's website ASAP. Thank you for the great information. If I can figure out how to attach some photos, I will post the pics with the Pachmayr's vs. the walnut grips.

Thanks again.

Regards,

Matt

It all depends on how much you want to pay. Nill grips makes "coke" reproductions for both square and round butt K and L frame guns. They are beautiful, natural hand cut walnut, with wood grain and checkering that is absolutely flawless. They're also just about ergonomically perfect. I have a set of Nill round-square conversion cokes on my 686-6 and they're the best grips I own. But, they're pricey, costing somewhat north of $200 a set. Well worth it in my opinion, but, the fact that I've only put them on one of my revolvers testifies to their expense. I'm really thinking about getting a second set for my 27-3.
