After living in Alaska for some time, carrying a Model 29 four inch with me fishing and just out there, I was taken today by seeing a 629 with a 3, maybe a 3.5 inch bbl. Now I want one and I live in Tennessee now. Go figure...

I don't see why you can't carry a 629 in Tn. Go for it. Don

I have never shot a 3" 629. I wonder how it would compare in terms of recoil to the 4".

I never shot a 4", but this 3" is managable IMO. I shot a one handed 6 round string at 25 yards and got them all in the 9/10 ring. Brisk fire, as you would at a threat, but well short of double tapping - it IS a .44 after all.

Typically I shoot it two handed as is my custom. Better that way.
