Car radio Touch screen VENT!!!

When I bought my Dodge Challenger in 2010, I intentionally chose a car that did not have built in navigation, etc. Just a basic stereo. I upgraded the speakers and it was great.

The two vehicles that we drive currently aren't available without all of that stuff. I'm not big on spending money on fancy accessories. Just more stuff to break and they depreciate like crazy.

Sorry about your luck OP.

Just read 27" screen in the new Genesis G 80'S, wow !!
how big can they go before the gov. steps in ?

I used to do my own car stereo upgrades. It's pretty hard to swap out head units now because they control a ton of car functions.

My last upgrade was swapping out speakers in Dodge Challenger (which I no longer have).

Exactly. They are no longer "stereos" but Infotainment that also control a lot other vehicle functions. One module in the back, if you mess it up, the car will not longer move!

Read recently that several auto manufacturers are moving away from the touch-screen stuff, and back to knobs and switches, for a number of different functions. Apparently this is for two reasons: 1) The touch-screens are too distracting and are contributing to accidents. 2) Customers just don't like them.

I am definitely in the second category!

...or you can be like me. With the first car I had with a touchscreen, I quickly found that it was extremely distracting to use, so I don't like them. ;)

and 3) all those fingerprints being left on the screen!

Here's a pic of this exciting development. It looks kind of like some controls formally assigned to a touchscreen are now knobs and buttons below the screen. When Sarge9 first posted the new development I envisioned a 27" TV glued to the dash so wives and girlfriends could keep up with Whoopie on the "View" while they drive to yoga classes.

Our last car buying experience was in 2015 when the wife needed new wheels. She'd found the car she thought she wanted online and we went to look/test drive it. Once we started the paperwork the sales guy started a canned speech, which I cut off when I heard the word "connectivity". I stated that we were there to buy transportation, not internet service.

There was a pause, then the sales guy thanked me, saying that was a required part of the spiel. We finished things up quickly...
That would have finished things up quickly for me, too, with "No thanks" and walking out the door.

Absolutely. I find it odd, well, actually hyopocritical, that we can be charged with distracted driving for operating a cell phone while driving (which I agree with), but operating the equivalent of an iPad attached to the dashboard is OK.

That G80 is just rediculous! Nobody needs that much "information" in their face while trying to drive. No wonder people behind the wheel are so distracted.

It's now getting to the point when I get in a new car, I can't figure out how to even start it!

Truth: The other day at the track I was in a students new Mercedes AMG and tried to voice start the car. They laughed. I figured it was worth a shot! :)

What could go wrong?

I think there's a 43 inch touchscreen (or somewhere in the 40s at any rate) in some of the newest Lincolns. I believe that the Cadillac Escalade is over 50. Note that these are very wide aspect ratios unlike your "normal" touchscreens, though.

My Bronco has a 12 inch screen with built in navigation, etc., but thankfully the HVAC and radio have knobs and buttons. I do not care for my wife's Lincoln with everything on the touchscreen. She seems to be okay with it, though. Of course, she is a dozen years younger, so that could have something to do with it.

Maybe. But I can stream music from my phone to the stereo and listen to what I want to listen to.
Agreed. But although I can't find it at the moment, I recall an article in the Bellingham Herald a year or so ago about a woman in WA state who found that her car's infotainment system was logging the music she streamed from her phone. She challenged it in court as an invasion of privacy and the judge ruled against her. This is an article from one of our papers on a similar ruling a few years ago, but there are several others online:
Carmakers can legally record your texts, calls, rules judge

Seattle-based judge rules automakers collecting data via car infotainment does not meet threshold for privacy violation
I won't buy any car that does this unless the "feature" can be disabled.
