I have a question or two about the new crop of car safes, like those from hornady and such that have the cable attachment.

Those that have the cable that can be wrapped around a fixed support, such as a car seat bracket. How do these cables attach to the safe body? Can the cables be ripped from the safe body?

Thanks for your help.

I have not found one of these "safes" that I can't open with a hammer and a screwdriver. Cable has a large loop on one end that goes into a slot in the side of the safe and when you close the lid you can't pull the cable out. But you can cut it.

If your vehicle is an SUV

Try TruckVault

TruckVault - TruckVault Secure Storage for Your Vehicle

Have had one in my Excursion now for about 12-13 years, secure and out of sight when the doors are closed. Lots of stuff can be loaded in and kept secure, ammo, tools, firearms, toilet paper :), jumper cables, etc.

Can't say enough good things about this product, except to say that the newer ones are even better than the early ones... better slides, locks, etc.

Edit.... they make them for Sedans now too... :)

The "safes" are not going to stop someone from stealing a gun from your car. They may slow down a thief or deter someone just rifling through the car for a wallet or cash.

When I lived in New York City, the news channels loved leaving a locked car unattended on the worst streets. Once a gang had decided to hit it, it would be stripped to the frame in seconds, not minutes.

Side benefit to my cabled car safe, is that I can remove it and use it to secure my carry when a guest in someones home, especially if there's a possibility of children being present.

I keep one of those "lock boxes" under the driver's seat cabled to the seat frame only for those times when the law specified that must have it there.
(School grounds primarily)..other than that I keep a lead bar in it for weight in case of a smash and grab and I hide my weapon in plain sight

Who would want to steal a pair of really old rotten eat up pair of snow boots.

Not sure about that brand but the ones I have seen are 18GA steel and the cable is tiny. I doubt the steel could hold up to very much tugging on it, but cutting the cable with dikes seems like it would be easier/quieter for a thief.

There are some that use a much thicker cable and steel for the box, but they aren't $29.95
