I have had my carry permit for about 4 months and carry everyday I was curious how many on here who carry has every had to use it. How long have you carried and not used it and how long you carried until you had to use it just curious of the odds of ever needing it...

I hope I never have to use my firearm for the purpose intended with the permit. But, you never know now-a-days. You'd be surprised how many LEO's have never had to use-fire their weapon while on duty. I recall Massad Ayoob remark in an article that the closest he came was to use a voice command and the sight of his firearm for an apprehension.

I have carried for over 35 years, no one has ever seen my gun, let alone a draw. I have been in some bad situations that a proper attitude always got me through. With proper training you can get an attitude that wil make a BG nervous but not be sure why.

There was a self defense shooting about 2 miles from my home about two weeks ago.

I've carried a firearm for self defense for nearly 20 years and like many hear don't look forward to the day that I have to use that firearm. You also have to realize that the firearm is just one of many tools that we us for self defense.
A little common sense goes a long way, training and self awareness play a big part in my day to day routine; the firearm is the last option. The location from the article above has been robbed many times in recent years. Also in the area have been other crimes including a car jacking that ended in a fatality, numerous burglaries, etc. Whether or not the intended victim knew about these various crimes in the area is up for speculation.
This situation may have been avoided if they had known. My mother lives with me and after several crimes in the area I've tried to make her more aware of her surroundings and avoid going to places that could be dangerous. My point is that there is more to self defense than carrying or using a firearm, the firearm is always the last option.

I've carried for about 3 years now. I've never had to draw on anyone. Came close one night a a gas station when this shady guy approached me as I was filling up my car and started acted strange, trying to sell me shoes and getting way too close to me. But I guess he sensed I was up to something so he quickly broke contact. Don't know what his intentions where but probably not good ones. I would happily live my having to be involved in a defensive shooting. Been shot many times in Iraq and its never fun.

I had some squabbles while on duty as a uniformed officer. No one but my wife and a select few trusted friends has ever had an inkling that I carry a gun all day every day.
Fortunately I have never had an instance where I felt the need to draw a firearm since I left LE.
Carrying a concealed weapon usually develops a state of mind, which if paid attention to, will keep you out of situations that require a gun.
