When you go out riding for the day, Do your carry on your person? Or on the machine? If you carry on your person, I would assume you have some kind of good retention like a thumb break.

I carry on my person. I would never have the gun bouncing around in the quad storage at all. Not easily accessible either. I normally wear some type of pullover with a tee shirt when I ride. I use my High Noon Slideguard with my SA XD40sc. It retains the gun well. When it is REALLY hot, I will carry my snubby in my camelback. It has a small zippered compartment. I ride utility quads. Riding is not too wild.

I ride on private property where carrying openly is legal. My handgun rides in a shoulder holster or on my hip.If I carry a rifle, it is strapped across my back. The country I ride in is rough and the quad really shakes up firearms.

If I am carrying my normal defensive firearm, a Colt Commander, no change...just IWB in a Bianchi swede clipon holster... Never had a problem.

If I have one of the heavy revolvers on me it is still in an open top holster like a DeSantis Speed Scabbard as it would be under a coat or vest protected and unseen.

A friend was carrying a M17 6" .22 one day in a thumbsnap holster...snap came undone and even though it was good name brand holster, without a good friction fit the gun managed to end up "back up the trail"...he was lucky enough to find it before it was found by someone else or run over...

A retired Firefighter buddy of mine carries a model 29 in a tanker style shoulder rig fron El Paso Saddlery, the kind with the strap across his chest. Swears by it.

It's not a quad, but I still occasionally ride BMX bikes. I carry A Taurus 605 .357 snubby in a cheap Galati Int'l IWB holster in the appendix position. It never moves. I usually have a BUG in each front pocket.

I have a ccw to start with. But when in the boonies, which is mostly or all BLM here, its no problem. However I guess techintly, some lines are occasionly crossed that no one worrys about. Lets say you want to carry a belt gun, yet it gets cold and you want to wear a jacket. In fact, just that happened my last two rides with a couple that we went out with. The 1st time when I only casualy knew the guy he strapped on a auto in a holster and put on a coat over it all, said something like hope ya all dont mind. I flashed my model 40 out of my pocket to show him we wernt virgins, but let him know I had a permit, he dont. We rode up cross country to a ski area cafe. His coat was off and on, nobody seemed alarmed. I suppose it could be said every time the coat flopped over his gun he was breaking the law? However this is the west. (utah)

I just reread the original question. Are you asking from a legal standpoint or safety of carry standpoint? In my case I am apt to be carrying any one of a half dozen or so guns. But for all, I have good holsters that are secure. Usualy I like a thumb brake or at least a good cross strap. However lately I have been takeing this outfit with a leather thoung strap for the hammer. It is very secure. The holster is a EL Paso. Also fits my 4" M&P. The gun shown is a PC model 66-3. I carried on my job over 35 years and dont ever recall loseing or haveing a gun shake out of a holster. I am concerned more with the best carry of a rifle on my quad and havent worked that one out yet. Scabbord or just mounts? Just mounts would subject the rifle to a lot of dust, dirt and scratchs but would be a lot faster to get in action! I think it would boil down more to am I carrying a beat up truck rifle, or is it one of my nice classic scoped rifles?
